Sombra revealed!
Finally, finally, finally! It took quite some time but we finally know who Sombra is and what she can do. A lot of videos showed up at once on the 4th of November with information about Sombra and also her own video where you see her working with Reaper and Widowmaker. But who is Sombra really and what abilities does she have? Let's find out!
Who is Sombra?
Sombra is a young woman that learned to hack at a young age and became pretty good at it, she did this for quite some time (ever since she was a little girl) and got away with it most of the time until one time she was noticed. This made her upgrade and had some implants that made her an even better hacker and it also gave her some abilities. From the cinimatic with Reaper and Widowmaker you can say that Sombra is playful, she teases Reaper with opening the door and then closing it right in front of him, but you can also see that Sombra doesn't really follow anyone. She is her own boss and likes to do what she wants. If I had to guess her drive in life then I'd say it's curiosity, learning how everything works and who controls everything, and a desire to control things herself. When she is ordered to kill the target (a powerful woman in Russia) in the cinematic she doesn't kill her but instead she blackmails her and then asks her to do things for her in the future if she asks for it. Then she tells Reaper that the target got away. This makes me believe that Sombra isn't really with an organization but pretty much follows her own rules and does what she wants to do while pretending to help Talon (the organization that Reaper and Widowmaker work for). I guess you could say it's all a means to an end.
What are Sombra's abilities?
In another video you can see Sombra in action in an Overwatch match. She has 200 health and she's an attacker, this makes her not super resilient to damage but she has tricks to avoid damage and counter attacks from enemies. Her hack ability is probably one of her most powerful abilities, she can hack characters that can't use abilities during that hack and it also cancels an ultimate. This is incredibly useful and also pretty overpowered if you ask me. She can also hack the turret of Torbjörn and hack health packs so people on the other team can't use them for a certain amount of time. Hack doesn't stun people, so just because they can't use an ability doesn't mean they can't shoot you! Sombra can also turn invisible, which is an effective way to get out of a battle with another player or help you sneak up on people. She also has an ability to place a device on the ground that when activated with teleport Sombra there. This is a great way to get out of battle when you're wounded or help you suprise people. Her ultimate is an emp blast that will do damage in an area of effect, cancel ultimates and it also destroys the shields of Reindhardt and Zarya, which makes Sombra's ultimate a good opening move if you want to tear down a defense. Looking at her abilities she seems overpowered but maybe the cooldowns for her abilities are high and perhaps not as effective as you might think. She also uses some type of uzi for standard attacks which holds 60 bullets in one clip and can do quite a lot of damage if you focus on one character.
What kind of effect will Sombra have on Overwatch?
I think a lot of people will love playing as Sombra and also a lot of people will hate people playing as Sombra. She will most likely be one of the most annoying characters in the game because she can hack your character and so you can't use abilities or she cancels your ultimate. There are already some characters that can cancel your ultimate but having both an ability and an ultimate that can do that will make Sombra even more annoying. She also has the ability to become invisible and she can teleport or recall (looks a bit like the Tracer ability except Sombra doesn't get her health back) so it might be difficult for some people to beat her in a one on one fight if you face a player who's really good with her. The question also rises what Sombra means for Tracer, because the characters are a bit similar and with Sombra having more useful abilities it kind of makes you wonder if this means the end for Tracer. Well maybe some people will prefer to play as Tracer but Sombra does look like the better character of the two. It wouldn't suprise me if Sombra gets nerfed, because the way things are looking now she is just way too powerful! She looks like a lot of fun to play but it will probably take a lot of skill to actually be good as her. She will probably find her way into Overwatch this month, so you just have to wait a little bit longer.
