Can a movie make a game more interesting?

It's nothing new these days, movies based on games. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but what kind of effect does the movie have on the game? Are people more interested in playing that game or is there no real change to the popularity to that game? It's an interesting thought because seeing so many game movies it really makes you wonder if they do it to give the fans something they might like or use it as a promotion for the game, maybe it's even a bit of both.

Game movies are bad?

I guess it depends who you ask, some people hate game movies and others love them. Just look at the Resident Evil movies, some people really hate these movies (some of them claim to be Resident Evil fans, it's difficult to say though with all the negativity) and others like them. But have those movies really done any good for the Resident Evil games? From my point of view I don't think they did much good for the Resident Evil game series, oh sure it might have introduced more people to the games but seeing as the movies are only slightly connected to the games it's easy to separate the two worlds of Resident Evil. The movie world of Resident Evil is made for Alice, the main character in all the Resident Evil movies, but in the games she doesn't even exist, in the game world of Resident Evil characters like Chris Redfield, Jill Valentine and Leon Kennedy play big roles in the games while in some of the Resident Evil movies they play a side role to the main character Alice. I think that's why some people hate the movies, because they don't feel like it's about Resident Evil and that's also one of the problems with game movies. Do you want to follow the game exactly with the story and the characters or create something more unique or at least different while using certain parts from a game? I guess that makes certain game movies bad and others good, it really depends who you ask.

Game movies should stick to the game?

I get that, I really do. But the problem with that is that movies can become predictable and if you know what will happen next then that can ruin the movie for you. Sure some lame things happening in the movie can also ruin the movie but knowing exactly what will happen next isn't very interesting now is it? This is why a lot of game movies take their own course, which is a good idea but the problem is that some of these paths they take lead them far away from what made people love the game. So then you end up with a movie that is very loosely based on the game, sometimes it's just the name in the title, and you really have to wonder if it's worth your time to watch that movie. The trick is to find the silver lining between original content and game lore, so give people something new without cutting too much stuff out that actually identifies the movie as a game movie. Because at that point you could just make it a movie that isn't based on the game at all. Because if you're just going to use the name from a game for your movie then you're clearly hoping to lure in some fans while not giving them anything from the game which is something they might actually like.

Can a movie make a game more interesting?

I think it can, but it's risky because sometimes movies can also ruin games. Well not really the game but more your experience with the game. Because if there's something you really like about the game and they completely ruined that in the movie then it might ruin your experience in the game. It might seem silly but I've seen it before, just look at the Mortal Kombat movies. The characters that looked cool in the game look a bit weird and sometimes even ridiculous in the movies, ok some of them look cool but seriously some look absolutely ridiculous! I think the Silent Hill movie did a good job, it pretty much introduced you to the games and gave you an impression how horrible the town can be. I'm not saying it's an amazing piece of work but for a game movie it's actually quite enjoyable to watch. People will always be suspecious when it comes to game movies, wether you're a gamer or not. Because a gamer will expect things and can easily be disappointed if the movie doesn include things the gamer expected while the person who doesn't enjoy playing games might not even be interested in the movie because it's based on a game. It not easy to please the fans, so that's why I would advice people that want to make a game movie not to try too hard to please fans but just make something they would actually enjoy watching. Make the game movie an experience that makes you want to play the game again and no not because the movie was so bad but because the movie was so interesting that it made me want to pick up the game again and play it once more.
