Are some games designed to make you mad?
Have you ever played a game that made you so mad that you wanted to break it? If you haven't then consider yourself lucky or maybe you're just the type of person that is very easy going and don't get angry that easily. Unfortunately I do get angry when a game constantly annoys me, up to the point that I just want to break everything in my line of sight. I can't imagine why some developers would want to make some games so annoying, for example a moment in the game where you can die very easily and the checkpoint is further back which means you have to go through a cutscene you can't skip and do some other bullshit several times if you're unlucky. Yeah try to stay calm then!
A game that is challenging is fun to play?
Well that's the idea I get when I look at certain games, but is it really fun when you just want to make progress and constantly fail? The worst thing that can happen is when you have shitty controls, a horrible camera possition and instant death punishment. That is just a recipe for disaster, something that will drive you crazy if you keep at it long enough. At that point it's not fun or even a challenge, it becomes my mission to just beat the game and never play it again. It's not like you get a medal for it but I consider that a personal victory and that's important to me as well.
Developers don't want you to beat their game too quickly?
That's something I've been thinking about, the reason why some games are tough is because developers don't want you to beat their game too quickly. In case you don't know there are gamers called speedrunners that try to beat games as fast as possible. Personally I don't see the fun in that but that doesn't change the fact that there are people out there that can beat games really fast. So when you make a game tough these speedrunners will have a tough time trying to beat these games quickly. Unfortunately that means for other gamers that you're facing games that have annoying moments that can keep you stuck for some time and that usually doesn't improve your motivation to play that game again.
Some games just want to make you mad?
I know it sounds ridiculous and it probably is, but honestly sometimes when I play a game I can't help but get the idea that the game I'm playing is just designed to make you mad. No matter how long I stay calm it's just a matter of time when I had enough and the game starts to piss me off. But what can you do about it? Well I guess I could stop playing but that would be admitting defeat, then there's the smart option where you take a break or look online for a guide to help you through the game and then there's my personal favourite where you keep trying until you finally make it and curse everything about the game while playing. Playing games can be fun, but sometimes games can really make you mad and there doesn't even have to be a good reason for it. Sometimes all the ingredients are there to make you mad, it's probably a good idea to avoid these games but unfortunately you can't always see that from trailers or gameplay alone. Usually the developers keep the frustrating parts out of the gameplay trailers, gee I wonder why...
