Sinful Sunday: Taunting or insulting?

When I look back at my early days with gaming I know that I was often an asshole towards my friends, this already started in Mario games and later in Goldeneye 64 I was probably one of the biggest assholes you could face. Maybe it was my arrogance or maybe I'm just an asshole, but it still comes down to me taunting my friends when they're defeated again. I can't say I changed that much over the years, I still like to taunt friends and sometimes even strangers online. But when it comes to other people in online multiplayer then they usually deserve it with cowardly tactics (camping or constantly hide behind their friends). I don't insult people that much, that really comes into play when I strongly suspect someone of cheating or if someone is being very rude to me. Look I never said that I'm a nice guy, but I do prefer to keep things civilized for as far that's possible in multiplayer.

Why do you taunt other people?

Let me first say that I usually only taunt friends, but that usually just for fun and isn't meant as a real insult. Sure there are the childish ways of taunting, for example teabagging, but I prefer to stick to an emote (if that's possible), for example in Destiny you can do a dance emote on a defeated enemy or just wave. Ok that's not very mature but making other people annoyed does usually help you in the end, because they'll play worse (I know from experience that when you get mad you usually play worse) and that helps you and your team. I never mean to really upset people, it's just the competitive nature in me that wants to show off a bit when I do well in a game and of course get back to people who were taunting me. Of course once you start with taunting you can bet your ass on it that others will start to taunt you as well, which seems fair because you can't expect other people to just ignore you dancing on their corpse! But I must admit that there is a satisfaction to just destroying them in a match, for example killing them ten to twenty times more than they could kill you, and have them watch the screen where it shows how many teams they were killed by you in the game. I call that a civilized way of handling uncivilized business.

Why do some people insult others?

I don't think I can give you an answer that would truly explain that. Sometimes people just do things and when you play online with strangers it's easy to be an asshole towards others. But some people are also terrible losers, so when you beat them in a game then you shouldn't be surprised that you sometimes get hate messages. I know that I got a lot of those in Max Payne 3, usually they came from people that couldn't handle that they were beaten by someone else. If you play a game then you should always realize that you can lose, maybe there are some games where it's impossible to lose but if you play a competitive game with others then there are always winners and also losers. If you can't handle that then you shouldn't play those type of games! Maybe there are also people that just don't know the difference between taunting and insulting, they think it's fine being a racist in the game chat and will say things that are absolutely not acceptable. It's easy to say that this is ignorance but sometimes I think that they're being assholes deliberately.

So what's the difference between taunting and insulting?

When you taunt someone it's more a type of teasing, I don't think you really mean to hurt someone but it's just being the type of asshole for fun and don't mean anything bad with it. But when you insult someone then you clearly do want to hurt someone, there's no room for subtlety and you often know exactly that they're being offensive to you. I also think that insults don't belong in a game, if you're really such a bad loser then it's probably better to do something else when you get upset instead of venting your frustration on others with hateful messages. Taunting can be fun, insulting is being rude and there's no fun in that. Insults lead to more insults and then I doubt you even realize what it was all about. So keep the fun in a game and stick to taunts or just play the game, either way it's important that you're having fun and not wasting time on meaningless bullshit that comes along with insults!
