Playing games isn't always a good thing?

This might seem odd to you but playing games isn't always a good thing, I'm not even talking about you skipping school to play games or calling in sick for work when you prefer to play games. No I'm talking about games that actually make you feel depressed. I don't think you need games to feel depressed but sometimes games can really make you feel terrible or so sad because of something that happened in the game. I know it's just a game but that doesn't mean that you don't feel anything!

Games aren't real?

Yes and no, I guess both answers work here. Sure games aren't real, you play in a virtual world and the things that you do there aren't happening in real life. But the feelings you have are real, also how a game makes you feel is very real. I know that might be a bit confusing but it really comes down to how far you get sucked into the game. If you can distance yourself from everything that happens in the game then I doubt it has a big effect on you, but if you lose yourself in the story then everything that happens will have an impact on you and eventhough it's not real the feelings you have are. For example if a character dies in the game and you really liked that character then you feel sad, but when two characters fall in love then that makes you happy. So in a way games are real, more than some people would ever admit.

So how are games a bad thing?

If you're sensitive to negative situations then you might want to avoid certain games because it can be very depressing playing those games! Not that there is anything wrong with crying or feeling sad, but if you're very sensitive with that then that can really make you depressed and that's not a healthy state of mind. But since you can't predict the story in a game and you don't always know what happens, it means that sometimes you're in for a nasty surprise. I wouldn't recommend throwing the controller away and turning off your console, it's probably better to continue playing the game because with some luck things get better later in the story. Otherwise play these games with friends, that usually makes things better and makes playing the game less intense. Of course not every game is like that, some games are pretty simple. For example finish first in a race, shoot all random enemies and move on, beat the other character in a fist fight or win a match in any sport game. But then there are also games with a story, a story that can sometimes be pretty intense. If you're feeling depressed then playing these games might not always be a good thing, but it doesn't automaticly have to be a bad thing. I heard stories from people where they actually felt better playing certain games, for example people that played Fallout 3, Skyrim and Life is strange. These games can have a positive effect on you as well. You probably know what's best for you, but it's smart to sometimes take a break and do something else.
