Game profile: Albert Wesker

Albert Wesker is my favourite character from Resident Evil, from the first moment I saw this guy in Resident Evil I knew that this would be my favourite and even when I discovered he was evil I still kind of hoped this wouldn't be the last I saw of him. Well I was in luck because Wesker showed up in several other Resident Evil games, not always as the main antagonist but more like the man behind the scenes plotting. I would like to add that there are spoilers in this game profile so if you haven't played all the Resident Evil games then you might want to stop reading here!

Name: Albert Wesker
Age: 38 (in the original Resident Evil)
First appearance: 22nd of March 1996 in Resident Evil
Role: Main antagonist in Resident Evil and Resident Evil 5, also shows up in Resident Evil Zero, Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil: Code Veronica.
Family: Oswell E. Spencer (father), Alex Wesker (sister) and Jake Muller (son).

Background story.

Wesker (as most people in the game call him) was created in an experiment called the Wesker project, this was a project where scientists tried to create some type of super human beings (smarter and better than a normal human). But the project was pretty much a fail and only some of the children survived, one of those children was Albert and later at the age of 17 he joined Umbrella (the same company that was behind his creation). He became a rising star in the company and became a specialist in bioengineering and biotechnology. He also had a working relationship (friendship might not be the right word) with another rising star in Umbrella, William Birkin. Later he formed (under orders of Umbrella) S.T.A.R.S. and was the captain of Alpha team. But he was still working for Umbrella and eventually he would lure both Bravo and later Alpha team to the mansion where most of them where killed. Unfortunately for Wesker his greatest achievement, the Tyrant, turned on him and mortally wounded him. Seeing no other way to survive he took the experimental medicine (if you can even give it that name) William Birkin gave him. This kept him alive and gave him super human speed and strength, but at the same time it's also killing him so if he doesn't take a dose of antidote every day he will die. After the mansion incident Wesker disappeared and was presumed dead, but he just kept a low profile and was scheming in the shadows. He sent his spy Ada Wong to check on things in Raccoon City and also to get him samples of the T-virus and other dangerous stuff. It took several years but eventually Chris Redfield (a member of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team and his nemesis) met him again in Resident Evil: Code Veronica, it's here where you first see the super powers of Wesker and he almost kills Chris and also his sister Claire Redfield. They meet again at another mansion owned by Oswell E. Spencer. Wesker was looking for Spencer because it's in his DNA to look for his father, if you can even call him that. What Spencer didn't realize is that this didn't keep him safe once Wesker had found him and so Wesker killed Spencer after a short conversation. This is where Chris and Jill Valentine (another member of S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team) find Wesker again and they fight, but this time things don't go so well and Wesker and Jill fall out of the window and are both presumed dead. Chris isn't convinced and makes it his mission to find Wesker and kill him! Eventually they meet eachother in Africa (this happens in Resident Evil 5) for the last time and Chris also discovers that Jill is still alive but controlled by a device on her chest that makes her Wesker's puppet. Chris manages to save Jill and eventually kill Wesker who is completely insane when he wants to expose the world to his latest invention the Ourobouros virus. Wesker exposes himself to the virus and get some freaky tentacle arms and tries to eliminated Chris but fails and Chris kills him by shooting him into the lava (the fight is in the middle of a volcano) and then shooting a rocket into him together with his partner for that mission Sheva.

What makes Wesker such an interesting character?

For me it's simple, he just looks cool! But that's an easy answer, I guess if I really have to explain it he's the guy you secretly like eventhough you know he's evil. Whenever Wesker enters a scene you can't help but notice the guy, not just because he constantly walks around with his black shades but also because he looks a lot more interesting than most people you meet in Resident Evil. It's also interesting that Wesker isn't just a brawler, he's also pretty smart and knows a lot. This makes him not just dangerous in a fist fight, especially after he got his super powers, but he's also the type of guy who makes plans to trap you and then experiment on you. A lot of people are sad, some are even mad, that Wesker died and refuse to accept that. I think Capcom tried to remedy that by introducing his son (Jake Muller) as a playable character in Resident Evil 6 and with the remake of Resident Evil (this game was already available on the Gamecube but after Resident Evil 5 it also became available for the current gen consoles). You also meet his sister Alex in Resident Evil Revelations 2, you see a picture of her with Wesker and she also talks a bit about him. Capcom probably tries to find another villain for the Resident Evil series but I think most people just want Wesker back so maybe there will be a reboot for Resident Evil or they find a way for Wesker to return. Because let's be honest, true evil never dies!
