When the trailer is better than the game

I think we've all seen these amazing trailers and it made you want to play the game so badly, but then once you have the game it turns out not to be as cool as it looked in the trailer. Which is exactly why I don't fall for the oh look at the pretty trailer trick. If the game has a gameplay trailer, some good feedback from reviews and preferably a playable demo then I might be more convinced to give it a try. But sometimes I still take a gamble, eventhough that gamble is often based on something more than just a pretty trailer.

Why are certain games crap compared to the trailer?

Often a trailer is a fancy looking intro to the game, so it shows a lot of cool stuff in cool looking graphics and then when you play the game you're doing something not so cool with not so cool looking graphics. It makes sense though that the entire game can't be in the amazing graphics, eventhough these days there are some games out there that actually keep the amazing graphics. The pretty trailer trick is a con and some people still fall for that, which sucks for them but it doesn't have to be a disaster. Oh sure I wasn't happy when the awesome opening cinematic in Final Fantasy VIII turned into a slow paced rpg with much worse graphics but you can get used to things and it really pays off to keep playing because those pretty graphics would show up every now and then. Besides for that time the graphics were fine, I mean you didn't expect 2009 graphics in 1999 and the same counts for 2019 when graphics for games will be that much prettier! Pretty graphics aren't the problem, it's the trailer with those graphics that is used to lure in gamers that is a problem. Of course it's not so smart to fall for that but I can imagine that sometimes something looks so cool that you lose logic for a moment and pre-order a game just based on one fancy looking trailer. It's not the smartest move you can make but it happens.

Why wouldn't they make an animated movie instead of a game?

When you look at certain games then that actually makes sense because it would be cool if they made an animated movie out of that. But it's not the end of the world if the graphics in the playable parts are a bit less impressive than the cinematics, besides when you're fighting enemies or running for your life then I doubt you have time to even look at the world around you and how that looks compared to the trailer. When I look at Lego Batman 2 they actually made an animated movie with that, which is shorter than the game but still fun to watch. So it's not impossible, but I think most people prefer to play games than to just watch a former game that is now an animated movie. At least that's how I see it, maybe you think differently but as a gamer I would think you prefer to play a game than watching the game play itself (which is in a way the game turned into an animated movie).
