Youtube adventures part 17
Most people that post a video on youtube want to get viewers, but it's not always easy to get viewers. Why? Because there are a lot of videos on youtube and sometimes your small channel just can't stick out between all the other channels, especially compared to the big channels. But there is a trick to get people to click on your video, there's even a word for it.
Clickbait
It's a dirty trick though, because clickbait means you lure people into clicking on a video (which means you get another viewer) but the promise of the title or thumbnail of the video (which is usually the bait) is often not as good as you would think. For example someone puts in a title dropping hundred people in multiplayer like a boss, but then when you click on the video you see an average performance and he or she gets like twenty kills. I can imagine that people that clicked on the video feel like they've been fooled and it wouldn't surprise me that they will reward that video with a dislike. You can also put a thumbnail on a video that has nothing to do with the video or makes the video look better than it really is. This is also something a lot of people won't appreciate.
Sometimes a youtuber uses a clickbait without even realizing it, at least that's how I started. I would often look for a better thumbnail for my video because often the ones youtube would choose for me (if you upload a video youtube gives you three optional thumbnails) look bad. So I would look online for a better picture, but I didn't realize at that point I was even using a clickbait. Because by selecting a picture that didn't come from my video I already tricked people into clicking on it. Because my video has lower quality and would look less good than the thumbnail, so you can imagine that people weren't happy with that and I can't blame them. It's also why I stopped doing that, so maybe sometimes the thumbnail looks like crap at least it's actually from my video, so you get what you see.
Unfortunately not everyone is that honest, some people deliberately make thumbnails to lure people into clicking on their video. Especially when it's a reveal video, for example in this video I reveal the new characters or maps from the dlc and on the thumbnail you see some new characters and maps but once you watch the video there's just a guy talking about it and you see nothing new. That's deception and luring people to your video, which is something that I consider to be lame. If you just want to talk about something then don't make a secret out of that or try to lure people to that with clickbait. Honesty is much better and viewers that like to hear you talk will click on it anyway. Maybe not everyone is interested in it but it's better than luring people to your video and then get a lot of hate for it. Maybe you don't care about that but I doubt you enjoy getting hate for your clickbait trick.
There's nothing wrong with trying to promote a video or by making a thumbnail yourself, just try to stick as much to what the video is actually about and not make it something completely different. If you want loyal subscribers then it works out for you to be honest, because who would want to watch videos of someone that is known to use clickbait? People get tired of that and will most likely move on to someone else that doesn't do that. I can understand that some people really want to get a lot of viewers but clickbait is a cheap and dirty trick, if that's how you want to be known on youtube then go right ahead but I wouldn't recommend it. Sometimes it's better to take the long road and hopefully people will find your content sooner or later. Especially if it's really good and interesting!
