Button bashing
It seems that more and more games want you to smash on the buttons of the controller, which seems like fun but knowing that this weak piece of plastic can´t handle much it´s not the smartest way to handle your controller. In the good old arcade days I could smash on buttons, ok nothing too crazy but at least those machines had a lot more resilience than these weak controllers we have now. You have to pay a small fortune for one of them and they fall apart with the slightest bit of force you use. After smashing a couple of controllers out of frustration I learned to be careful with them, but when games force you to be an agressive button basher it doesn´t really help.
Button bashing is nothing new but I do seem to see it in more and more games, even games that could easily do without this abusive way of treating your controller. Instead of button bashing people came up with the idea to press a certain series of buttons in a sequence, I first saw this in God of War which was fun. But soon others games followed and Resident Evil 4 also had those moments in the game, but they also stuck to their button bashing which didn´t made the game more fun to me. It doesn´t take skill or intelligence to beat something like that, it requires of you to be a lunatic and go nuts on your controller. Maybe I missed the point where this is supposed to be fun but I seriously dislike it!
So why is button bashing in games? Well I think at first it was a way to make you fight for the survival of your character, for example you pressing the buttons that many times so wildly would symbolize your struggle to survive. But maybe I´m seeing too much in it, maybe it´s just a simple way of making progress in a game. To be honest I don´t really know why button bashing is still in games, I´ve never heard from another gamer that they loved that and were happy it was in the game. So where people get this idea that they need to add that in a game is beyond me, I guess it´s just one of those things that is supposedly fun but in truth nobody really likes it!
Is button bashing healthy? I can say with more than enough experience that it´s not, because my hands feel terrible after a button bashing session. Especially when it´s just before a checkpoint and you fail a couple of times, this means that you have to do it several times and that´s never fun. It would suprise me if people are having problems with their hands because of this stupid button bashing, I guess if you take it easy you should be ok but most games don´t allow you to take it easy because then you´ll fail the button bashing section of the game and you´ll have to do it again. I do have to admit that I´ve become stronger, I mean that in the sense of taking more abuse from button bashing before my hands are hurting. As a kid my hands would hurt after a couple of hours of gaming, now I can play for 12 hours without any troubles. But that´s also not healthy, so I try not to make a habit of it and neither should you!
So button bashing is bad? Yes I think it´s safe to say that it´s bad, not just bad for you but also for your hardware. I bought a new controller just a couple of months ago, now thanks to Saints Row IV it´s broken again. The buttons don´t always respond anymore when I press them, so that makes it an unreliable controller and so I´m forced to buy a new one! Thanks to those warden fights where you have to button bash like crazy to beat one of the wardens when you´ve almost defeated one, if you´re too slow then you have to do it all over and that doesn´t make it any better. Let´s not forget about the frustration you get when failing, that isn´t healthy for your hardware and yourself either! So let´s hope that the new generation of games will have less button bashing and that the controllers are a lot stronger!
