Are teamplayers going extinct?
In the good old days you would be sitting on your couch playing with friends, you´d work together to beat a game and try to look out for eachother. Of course you´d have game modes or moments where you´d be messing with eachother. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that! But in the end you´d be helping eachother trying to get further with a game or beat that annoying boss. These days with online strangers things are a bit different, no longer do you play games with people you know. The other people you´re playing a game with can be and most times are complete strangers, of course you could think that a stranger is a friend you haven´t met but is that really how it is?
Often when I arrive in a multiplayer lobby I see either a lot of people with no mic plugged in, so they probably have no intention of speaking with anyone, or people that are loud and annoying the crap out of other people. That last group of people explains the first group of people, but still it´s difficult to work together when there is no communication. In games like CoD, BF and L4D it´s nice to have some communication with your teammates. Because it´s easy to be ambushed, overpowered or just killed in the back when there is no one looking out for you. A little bit of communication can help you a lot, for example warning someone for a camper or a sniper. It´s a little bit of effort but can help you make some new friends or at least help you build a good team to win the match.
It´s easy to be discouraged by some people, when you enter a lobby where people are shouting or singing you don´t feel like saying hi. It´s the same when no one says a word in a lobby, breaking the silence might be too much of an obstacle for you. Feel free to try something else, like giving compliments to a player who gets a good killstreak or thanking a teammate that saved your life. It might not be much but it can still mean the difference between an awkward silence and some helpful communication to help you secure victory for your team.
But what about the lone wolves out there? People who don´t like to work with others, who prefer not to communicate with others. Well there is always a risk you meet people like that, to be honest I´m more like a lone wolf than a teamplayer. But I´m open for communication, at least I try to be of use to the team. It´s also easy to slide into a lone wolf role when no one in your team wants to talk with you and they all seem to be going their own way. I doubt you´ll be doing anyone any favors by constantly running after them. Not everyone is looking for a new friend, so try not to be too much invested in the communication. If someone likes playing with you then I´m certain they´ll mention it or invite you for a party or something like that, if not then better luck next time. You can´t be lucky in every game and I wouldn´t expect to find friendly people in every match. My advice is this, just do your own thing and if others like that then you´ll notice soon enough. With doing your own thing I mean do what makes you happy in a game, but try not to annoy the crap out of people because that usually doesn´t get you a lot of love. If being a sniper is your thing then be the sniper for the team, save some lives and you might get some respect out of it from your teammates. The same counts for other roles, be the one that has a health pack for a wounded member of your team and they´ll probably appreciate you for it. They might even return the kindness the next time you´re in need of help.
I do have some more advice for anyone that gets angry quickly. If people or situations annoy you and make you angry then it´s better to take a break, thinking about something else might also help. If a camper shoots you for the fifth time then I completely understand you´re annoyed, but instead of telling him or her how much you hate him or her you could say something else. Humour is a good way of fighting against people who annoy you, it often catches them off guard because many expect people getting angry. This type of behaviour might also be appreciated by everyone wearing headphones and could lead to some friendly reactions. It´s better that people laugh with you then at you, so try not to go crazy in the chat and scream your lungs out. You´ll probably just end up in a video on youtube and you´ll be known as just another guy getting mad in a game.
Some people are actually looking for girls online to chat with and play games with. I will warn you that most of these girls get a lot of messages, so if you´re going to be number hundred on their list of messages then don´t be suprised if you don´t get a reaction. I´d say it´s smart to be creative and friendly. For example telling a girl that she was good in a match that you played with her will probably not hurt to say, getting compliments is nice and especially when people mean it. If you see that she needs an achievement/trophy that you also need (or maybe you have it already but won´t mind to help her) then offering your help might be a good way to play a game together. If not then better luck next time. Girls are fun to play with, so don´t be afraid to say hi. But perhaps its even better not to limit your search to just playing with girls, playing with guys can also be fun. Both sides have good and bad versions, so don´t feel discouraged by some rotten apples.
No one can force you to talk in a game, so if you really don´t feel like talking or working together with other people then you don´t have to. But winning in a match goes easier if you have other people working with you then people working against you or everyone just doing something by themselves. Maybe you´re confident, perhaps you feel like you don´t need other people to win. But let´s be honest, a finger poking you might be annoying but a fist hitting your face will actually hurt you. So don´t be just a finger, form a fist with your teammates and strike the enemy team as hard as you can!
Good luck and may technology grant you good communication!
