When your game freezes...
Do you know that feeling of frustration when you play a game and then suddenly out of nowhere it freezes? The worst part is that you haven´t saved in quite some time and you lost all the progress you made so far, so that means you have to do it all over again. For me this is probably one of the biggest things to trigger my anger, the fact that you lost your progress and have to do it over again. Also the fact that you can´t do anything about it makes me very annoyed, but I´ve heard stories about games that freeze and then after some time then unfreeze. Well I´ve never had that, I even waited 10 minutes once because I had played over 2 hours since my last save and didn´t want to lose all that progress. It´s problem that happens to most of us sooner or later, I guess there is no escape from a game freeze but was it always like this?
When I think back of my NES, SNES and N64 days I can´t remember one moment where my game would freeze. I don´t even think I had that on my Playstation or Gamecube. I got familiar with game freezes on the Playstation 2, which resulted in a love/hate relationship for me with that console. Now you have a lot of autosaves but then most times you had to manually save, something I didn´t always remember to do and before you know it you´d be playing for hours without a save. Your reward would be a game freeze that would undo all that you did, at least if you were stupid enough as me not to save every now and then. The Xbox, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 aren´t that different. My games still freeze from time to time, but I do find it interesting that the old consoles and games wouldn´t freeze or at least not as much as now. So modern technology comes with more problems instead of less, something that´s supposed to be more fun also comes with more frustration. You really have to wonder if it´s worth it...
I think game freezes happened on the pc longer, though I´m not much of a pc gamer so I couldn´t say for certain. But what I´ve heard from other people it´s not much better there, so it seems the superior pc is also not immune to game freezes. Which really sucks because I would switch to pc if I could play games without having to fear a game freeze. I constantly have to remind myself now to save every 10 or 15 minutes, which might be ridiculous to you. Well I was playing Saints Row IV this weekend and the game froze 6 times!!! I don´t know what you consider as a lot but this was almost a record for me. But as much as that sucks I was relieved to see that my progress was saved, the autosave seems to work pretty good in that game and I didn´t really lose that much progress. Even when the game froze in the last loading screen, from final battle to final cinematic, I only had to do the last fight over. Which was a big relief because doing the entire final mission again would´ve been quite annoying to say the least!
So what causes all these freezes? Is it really so that modern technology comes with more problems? Well I have to admit that I play a lot, so maybe when your console is overheated it will freeze the game. Still I find this weird because there are plenty of games I play a lot and not every game seems to freeze. Some games also seem to freeze at an exact point, like always in a cinematic or in a loading screen. It might seem like it freezes randomly but in truth it´s on a specific point. For example in Max Payne 3 my game would freeze almost every time when I saw the cinematic where enemies board your train in the final mission. Always in that cinematic on the same moment, so that doesn´t seem like a random freeze to me. So I do think that some games are just not that good, they´re launched too early and full of bugs or glitches.
Are the games that freeze always the popular games or also the less popular games? Well I can say that I´ve never had any of the Mass Effect or Dragon Age games freeze on me (knocking on wood), but GTA IV did freeze on me several times. Once again that´s a Rockstar game, Max Payne is also one of their games, so does that mean that they launch their games too soon and deliver bad quality? Well I wouldn´t go that far, they make amazing games and some of them are so big and fun to play that it might have something to do with it. You´ll play them a lot and because they´re so complex it might mess up your console which might cause it to freeze the game. I think they´ve taken extra time to make certain that GTA V is going to be ok, so I´m really looking forward to that and I definately hope that the game freezes will be to a minimum if we can´t get rid of them!
