Getting messages from other gamers while playing a game

Let me first say that I like the option that you can type messages to someone else, it´s easy to type a message if you want to say something and you don´t feel like plugging in your mic. It´s another way of communicating with others, but I wonder how many people actually have something interesting or nice to say? Most of the messages I get aren´t positive, it usually comes down to threats and insults. I´ll spare you the worst ones but it´s often messages that claim that you´re gay, that you´re a cheater or that your family should get a terrible disease. These are only the text messages, I don´t even listen to the voice messages because I don´t feel like listening to some loser saying something stupid.

But is it all that bad? Have people nothing nice to say to eachother? Well I think that really depends on the type of game you play, games with a lot of competition usually attract less friendly players. Frustration and irritation can easily turn a calm person into a raving lunatic, just be defeated enough times by the same person and you´ll dislike him (to keep it civilized). It doesn´t mean that you have to say something against the other, you can also leave the match (at the end of the match of course) and try your luck in another match. Unfortunately not everyone feels that way, some just have this need to tell someone what they think of him or her. Ok so you don´t like someone, it doesn´t mean you have to make threats or insults. Seems simple, but a lot of people just can´t help but let others know how they feel about them.

Getting back to the question if people have nothing nice to say to another in a game, I´d like to think back to another game. In Team Fortress 2 I had a lot of fun memories, even the opponents would sometimes compliment you if you impressed them. I got this message from a guy from Germany, it said: nice shot! Because I shot him with my sniper rifle in his head while he was jumping. So he could´ve gotten mad and raged against me, but no this guy decided to be friendly and even giving me a compliment. I was really suprised by that, because I didn´t had much experience with kindness in other games from other people. But also in Max Payne 3 I got messages from people that complimented me with my victory and would like to know what kind of loadout I was using. If someone asks me nicely I don´t see the harm in telling that, because it helps them get better and brings a bigger challenge for me to beat them.

It´s probably worse for women who play games, but people who insult women or harass them online are what I call virgin for life (V4L). So feel free to call anyone that if they bully or harass women in games. I can only imagine how bad it could be for women who just want to have a good time playing games but constantly get these annoying messages. I even heard from a girl that she had to change her gamertag because some guys just wouldn´t leave her alone. That´s kind of sad that it had to come to that and apparently nobody does anything about it. I mean what actually happens to people that get reported on xboxlive? As far as I know they don´t get permanently banned from xboxlive, no they´re allowed to come back after a certain amount of time. Well that should teach them!

Now every time I get a message I already assume it´s a negative comment, I don´t even expect anything good anymore. Just play CoD Black Ops 2 and you´ll know why. But maybe things will be better on the next generation of consoles, the annoying people won´t go away but hopefully there will be better punishment for everyone who sends these negative messages around. I like to think that if you don´t have anything good to say that it´s better that you don´t say anything.
