Saints Row IV
Yesterday I could finally play Saints Row IV and I must admit that I´ve been excited for that game, because I really like Saints Row the Third and having super powers means fun in my game experience. Things are still as insane as ever and the fun factor doesn´t really drop in the game, I would have to admit that there are good parts and not so good parts but I´d say most games have those moments. It doesn´t take a genius to figure out that this game strongly points to the movie the Matrix. Which doesn´t bother me for a moment, because they do it in such a way that you´d rather laugh than be annoyed. Like being naked the first time your character goes outside the simulation, in the Matrix they didn´t make a big deal out of it but in Saints Row IV your ´friends´ like to talk about it.
So what makes this game better than Saints Row the Third? Well in a way it´s not that different and at the same time it is, ok that´s probably weird to read so let me explain. The game takes place in Steelport, the city you probably remember from Saints Row the Third, but it´s a simulated version and has a unique look to it. You´ll also see some familiar faces, some are friendly and others are not so friendly. Your basic movement is also the same as you remember, but then you get your super powers and you´ll probably play the game differently as you did before. Which means you´ll probably won´t be using any cars, why drive when you can run and jump much faster? You also level up and unlock new abilities, this is nothing new but now you also have a power menu where you can make powers better and you can change the element in some powers. So if you want a fire blast instead of an ice blast you can do that. In a way you can say that it´s the same familiar formula but with some extreme ingredients added.
So the game is nothing but fun? Well I´d lie if I said yes, there are some less fun moments or even frustrating moments. Like flying a spaceship through some narrow sections is frustrating because if you fuck up you have to do it over again, there are checkpoints but sometimes it does mean you have to get past a series of difficult obstacles. Hacking stores to acces them might have been a fun idea and at first it is, but when you have to do that over thirty times it does get boring and annoying when you fail because then you have enemies swarming all over you. Some people have been complaining that it´s too easy, that you can´t be killed. Well if you play on easy that might be true, but when you start on medium or hardcore you´ll figure out that you´re not invulnerable and if you get swarmed by enemies it might be difficult to complete the mission or activity and survive. Which usually means that you have to flee and automaticly forfeit the activity, though some missions are forgiving if you use the run away tactic. You also have regeneration, but this doesn´t go as fast as some people might like to let you believe. But you do find health in most enemies you defeat, so that defenately helps! It´s not going to be very difficult to beat the game, but you can make it harder for yourself by raising the difficulty level.
There are also two other things I hear a lot when it comes to Saints Row games. First of all a lot of people like to compare it with GTA, which made sense in the first two games but even the second game was already a bit different. As ridiculous as GTA might get they´ll probably never get anywhere close to the ridiculousness in the Saints Row games. So if you enjoy playing a game for fun, if you like to have fun doing crazy missions and silly activities then you´re in for a blast! Especially now with the super powers you´re as far away from GTA as you can be in Saints Row IV. Another thing I hear a lot from other gamers is that Saints Row has changed too much, they liked it how it was in the first two Saints Row games. In a way I can understand that, you don´t like the changes they´ve made and prefer that they stick closer to the GTA idea. But then the game wouldn´t be original, then you´d probably be playing a GTA clone. In Saints Row the Third they took a different path and it´s a path for everyone, unfortunately not everyone wanted to take that path. Which is a shame because you´re missing out on a lot of ridiculous fun! But for those that didn´t like the changes then I´ll have to disappoint you, because things are even crazier in Saints Row IV. It´s your money so feel free to spend it on whatever you like, but I can definately recommend this game because it´s a lot of fun!
Should I buy Saints Row IV? Well that´s really up to you, I can´t make that decision for you. But if you really like Saints Row the Third and having super powers in an open world game then this might be the game for you. Once again you have a lot of customizing options, from crazy cosplay to something sexy and shiny! For fans of Nolan North you can have a great time with your male hero (or female hero, if you´re into that shit) and make him (or her) sound like him as his voice is in the game. There are once again enough crazy weapons to blow people up, suck them into blackholes, let them get abducted by aliens or a spiky tentacle to tickle them with. I´m certain I´m forgetting a lot but there is enough in the game for you to discover and have fun with. So if the long days of school or work bother you, then why not enjoy yourself when you get back home with this game? Saints Row IV is not the best game I´ve played this year, but it´s by far the game in which I had the most fun. I´d like to think that also counts for something!
