Sinful Sunday: Grinding = guilty pleasure?

A lot of games have moments where you have to grind, for me it's usually a part where I need to level up like crazy to become more powerful or to acces another area that requires a higher level than mine. So you put your mind on automatic and just grind your way to victory. But isn't that incredibly boring? Well sometimes it is and sometimes it's not.

Nobody likes grinding?

That's what I always thought, because who enjoys wasting time just trying to level up while you could continue playing missions or doing anything else that is more interesting? One of the moments where I discovered that grinding can actually be hilarious is in Skyrim, I had to level up like crazy to spawn a legendary dragon, if your level isn't high enough the chance of a random encounter with a legendary dragon is very small. So the higher your level is the better your chances are. So I decided to the capital of Skyrim and attack everyone in the blue palace. Sure I killed a lot of soldiers and other unfortunate NPCs but there were at least three characters I couldn't kill and  they where just stunned. So I could fight against them for as long as I wanted and try out all my weapons, magic spells  and potions. It probably sounds silly but I had fun with that, sure it was a lot of fighting but I gained a lot of levels with that and there's something funny about knocking people around. Remember you have those shouts that can throw people around? Well that made it even funnier! So maybe grinding can be funny, at least if you do it right.

Some people actually like to grind?

It wouldn't surprise me that there are people out there that actually enjoy grinding, it's at least something that keeps you busy and if you enjoy working on leveling up and gathering items then you're in luck because in a lot of games this is an option. You don't always have to grind, but it can often make the game a lot easier when you do. Just look at games like Final Fantasy, before you go to the last disc (looking back at FF VII and FF VIII here) it would be a smart idea to grind and get a lot more powerful because otherwise the last disc might prove a bit too difficult. I've played Final Fantasy VIII where I never spend any time on grinding and I had a lot more trouble beating the game and then I did spend time on grinding and it was so much easier. Maybe grinding seems like a waste of time but it's actually useful and if you enjoy grinding then that's definitely a bonus. Maybe some people hate it, others secretly enjoy it. Either way it can make things easier in a game and you'd be a fool if you didn't take an advantage of that!
