Who do you want to be in a game?
A lot of games put you in a position, you're often the only one that can save everyone and it's up to you to do exactly that. But some games give you options, are you going to be good or bad and will you save people or let them suffer? These are interesting options that not only give you a chance for some hilarious moments (for example instead of saving people from a monster you lock them up with the monster, ok that's pretty disturbing but in some games this is actually funny) but also allow you to have multiple playthroughs with some unique outcomes. That definitely beats the whole beat the bad guy and you're done type of game. But the real question is, what kind of person do you want to be in a game?
It's good to be bad?
That sounds a bit silly but in truth a lot of people like being bad in games. Not just doing some nasty things but really being bad, as in you kill everyone that get in your way and want to rule the world instead of saving it. But let's be honest, wouldn't you rather rule the world than to save it and get a handshake and then get kicked off the stage? Being bad gives you some unique options, for example you don't have to play by the rules and you can actually do whatever you want. Some games do require that you have to follow some rules but it often gives you more freedom then playing the good guy. Eventhough being good in a game has its own rewards. Is it better to be bad? I guess that really depends on the players, because some people enjoy being bad and others prefer being good.
It's better to be the king than a nobody?
In a lot of games you play as some nobody but that nobody has to become stronger and eventually become the hero the game needs you to be. Sometimes you're the king in that world, which means you get a lot of responsibility. It's easy to say that being the king is more fun, but sometimes it's also fun when nobody knows you and you make a rise to power. For example you start as nothing and you end up as the king (or queen). I think that's even more fun, to make that rise to power and increasing your power on the way to the top. Probably for that reason, because a lot of people like it and it keeps you busy for quite some time, is exactly why a lot of games let you start as a nobody so at the end of the game you become someone important. Wether that's being the hero, the saviour, the king, the villain or usurper depends on the game and the choices you made in the game.
So who do you want to be in a game?
I think it's the most fun if you can customize your own character, I mean sometimes certain characters already look pretty cool but it's nice if you can create your own character. Eventhough some games like Mass Effect already make awesome standard characters that you kind of want to go with that instead of messing with the character customization options yourself and make a monster. Well there might be people that like that but sometimes it's nice to work with what you already have instead of messing things up, even if that's an accident you'll be stuck with that for the rest of the game. But looks aren't everything, I don't think most characters will actually notice if you made an attractive character or a hideous character. But your actions will be noticed in a lot of games, so doing good things gets you praise while doing bad things gets you anger and fear from the characters in the game. It's fun to be good and it's fun to be bad, it's a good thing that it's just a game and you can do whatever you want. Which is exactly why I enjoy playing games, the freedom and creativity you can explore in a game have almost no limits and I think we all like to just lose ourselves (if even for a moment) in a game and just have fun!
