Romance in games exists?
Do you remember your first game that actually had the option to romance someone in it? For me it was Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, which was some innocent flirting and teasing which could eventually lead to a kiss (that happened when the screen went dark). That already shows how people thought at that time and even now romance or even intimacy in games isn't really accepted by everyone. But is it possible to find it in a game? Not in every game but they do exist!
Romance isn't dead?
Some people complain that romance is dead, as if it's all about sex now. I don't believe that and I know that romance isn't dead. Some people just don't see the value in romance, while others have a strong craving for romance and it might be the key to the heart of someone you like. In games it's not that different, when you meet someone you like then it's possible (in some games) that you can romance this person. In some games like the Witcher 3 it could be a one night stand but you could also go for a serious relationship, for example when you look at the Mass Effect trilogy. In the Mass Effect trilogy you can be with one person all three games, that would have to be Liara because she is a romantic person of interest in all three games (thanks to dlc in Mass Effect 2). But for those of you that prefer to switch it up there are a lot of other characters you can be with as well. There are even options for same gender relationships in Mass Effect 3, so I guess everyone can find some love in certain games. But building up a relationship with a character in a game isn't blunt, it will take some effort and saying the right things. If you're going to act like a douchebag and make your love interest upset then I doubt there is future for you with him or her in the game. So just like real life you will have to do your best and treat the other with some respect, which means listen to what the other has to say and be there for him or her. Maybe this is boring for some but in real life you usually can't skip this to get immediately to the good part (which would often be sex for some people). In Dragon Age: Inquisition you can even do romantic things for your love interest and try to win his or her heart over. But some people put up less resistance and are more than happy to sleep with your character, but these are characters that aren't really looking for a relationship unless you once again put some effort in it and convince them that you two are great together.
Do you need romance in games?
If I have to be completely honest then I would have to admit that you don't need romance in a game, because games work pretty well without romance. For example Halo Reach, Goldeneye 64 and Super Mario World are some amazing games that are a lot of fun and they don't require romance. Ok maybe Mario and Peach have something but comparing that to the relationships you can have with companions in games like Dragon Age and Mass Effect makes it incredibly small and hardly mentionable. I'm not saying that Mario and Peach have nothing, but you never see them kiss or even hold hands. So what is it exactly what they have? To quote an ex girlfriend of mine: "it's complicated." Right... But the thing is that romance brings a game to life! Sure it's fun to shoot other characters in the face or go on a quest and save the world, but sometimes you just want something else. To be with someone else and be happy. It's pretty much the same in real life. You can stay single and say that you're fine but isn't life better if you can share it with someone else? Well that's my opinion, maybe you think differently and that's of course fine. But I think a lot of people that are single do sometimes think about finding someone special in their life. So is it so weird that people that play a game sometimes also want to find someone special in that game for their character? I think it makes sense and that it's only natural to feel that way. I don't think we were made to be alone, but it's of course your choice. Both in real life and in a game.
