Overwatch is new and improved?
Yesterday there was a little surprise for Overwatch players, out of nowhere the new dlc became available and that means you got acces to a lot of new things! After a big download, a bit more than 10 GB, you get a a whole new game mode, arcade, a new hero, Sombra, and some new rules in Overwatch. But what does that all mean exactly? Well let's take a closer look!
What can Sombra do?
I already told you about her a couple of weeks ago, but to see her in action myself I can say that she's not so bad as some people make her out to be. Sure she can be annoying but she's not breaking the game. Her hack is probably one of her most annoying abilities that prevents the person being hacked from using his or her abilities or ultimate. But that doesn't mean that she can stop everything. For example Lucio can still use his speed or health boost, he just can't switch between them as long as he's hacked and McCree can still use his hammer fan so at close range he can still drop Sombra quite easily. Sombra is more a type of support attacker, she works best when she can assist others and that means no lone wolf adventures for Sombra because in a lot of one on one confrontations she's not going to be as amazing as you might think. Sure she could finish someone off that is wounded or maybe get someone that isn't paying attention but a lot of characters can definitely beat her in a one on one confrontation. Her invisibility is very useful, you move faster when invisible and it can help you get away from someone or get faster back in action, but if you get hit, if you shoot someone or use your hack then you will become visible again. When you try to hack someone it will take a moment and you can be interrupted while hacking which cancels the hack, you just need to hit her once with an attack and the hack is already cancelled. Her teleportation pads are a bit more frustrating, these can't be destroyed and it allows Sombra to get out of a fight quickly or get behind you quickly. Her ultimate, EMP, is useful but only in combination with other people. For example when a group of people are trying to capture a point you use your ultimate as Sombra and no one can use their abilities or ultimates which makes them quite vulnerable to the ultimates and abilities of your team.
What is the arcade mode?
In arcade mode you get to play all kinds of new game modes. For example 1 vs 1, 3 vs 3, mystery heroes (you all play as a random hero), brawl (you play all kinds of different brawls that you have seen so far, which means you're all defenders, all attackers, all support or you can only play as Phara and Mercy) and an unlimited game type where everyone can play as the same hero if they want to. This last game mode is pretty much the old quick play and should appeal to some people. You can earn loot boxes if you win your first 1 vs 1, your first 3 vs 3 and for every three victories you also get a loot box up to three in one week. So this arcade mode is perfect for some quick loot boxes, unless you're unlucky and keep losing because that's also a possibility. Some game modes, for example the 1 vs 1, can be very intense and will put your skills to the test. But I don't know how popular this will be, I think a lot of people will want to earn the extra loot boxes but after that the game mode might be a bit less interesting for some people. So probably at the start of the new week a lot of people will play it and at the end of the week there might be less people interested. But so far I've heard from several people that they're happy with the new game modes, especially 3 vs 3 is popular. You play the 1 vs 1 and 3 vs 3 game modes on a new map which is a base on Antarctica. This is a pretty small map so you won't play here in other game modes.
There are new rules?
Well there is at least one new rule that will annoy some people, you can only have one hero of each type in quick play. So there will be no more hero stacking in quick play and I'm very happy with that! It's really frustrating when you face teams that go all Genji or D.VA and your team just can't handle that. But before you go whining, you can still do this in Arcade mode so the hero stacking isn't gone but it just moved to another game mode. Several heroes have also gained some buffs which makes things a bit interesting. For example Soldier 76 will do a bit more damage now with his standard attacks and Phara will be able to get her flight boost faster so she can stay longer in the air. I don't think this all breaks the game but it sure has improved certain things and made other things quite interesting. I'm happy to return to Overwatch and try out Sombra and test my skills in the 1 vs 1 and 3 vs 3 game modes. I don't know if this is going to convince people to come back to Overwatch but I know that a lot of people are excited about all the changes to the game, let's hope it keeps the game fresh and fun to play!
