Movie Monday: Gladiator
Before the whole super hero theme in movies started you had Gladiator, pretty much a (super) hero from ancient times and a movie that just blows you away! Already in the opening scene you see the might of the Romans and of the hero of the movie, Maximus, which is quite impressive. That alone already made me want to watch the movie several times because it's an amazing battle. It was the first time I saw this type of movie in the cinema and it left a big impression on me.
What's so special about this movie?
At first you might think it's just another revenge movie. A guy gets wronged and this guy goes through tough times to get his revenge, it seems nothing special but if you really watch the movie and see what it is all about then you know that just calling this a revenge movie is dumb. The movie is about honor, friendship, keeping a promise and of course family. The majority of the movie takes place in Rome, in the arena to be exact and that's not a bad thing. It gives you a look into the world of the gladiators and you know that this is a tough world where not everyone makes it out alive or in one piece at least. The fight scenes in the arena look so good, it makes you cheer as well on your couch and leave you breathless at certain moments in the movie. The music brings even more feelings to the movie in certain moments, that makes this movie not just a movie but an epic adventure!
It's a brutal movie?
Yeah absolutely! If you think that this is the type of movie where actors hit eachother and one of them drops down with some red paint on them then you're sadly mistaken! Arms and legs will be cut off and even heads aren't safe! The movie is brutal but I think that it needs to be because it mostly takes place in the arena, the colosseum to be exact, and some weak display of fighting wouldn't have been fun to watch. This does mean that the movie isn't for everyone, so kids might not want to watch this or people with a weak stomach. Ok the movie isn't some type of horror movie but if you can't handle limbs being separated from bodies then you might not want to watch this movie!
Even after more than a decade it's still a great movie?
I think it is, mostly because there isn't another movie like Gladiator. Some movies have tried and failed miserably. I think one of the movies that got kind of close is Troy, but nothing beats Gladiator in my opinion. Maybe in the future but for now Gladiator is really the best in its kind of movie, at least that's how I see it. The actors did a great job, the story good and everything looks amazing. What more could you want? A sequel? Well if you know how the movie ended then you know that this isn't really something that is logic, but I wouldn't say no to another good movie. Perhaps not a sequel but a movie inspired by Gladiator.
