Sinful Sunday: Online hate, is it real?

I think we all had a moment online that we really dislike someone else, wether it's something they said or did, and sometimes this takes some drastic forms. For example moments were you're shouting, sometimes you type and other times in games with your headphones on, and maybe even making threats. Is this normal? Do you really mean what you say or is it just something you say in the heat of the moment? Let's take a closer look...

What happens online isn't real?

Some people actually believe that or consider that as an excuse to say what they want to say. But in truth what you say and do online is still real. Ok shooting someone in a game isn't real, but discriminating or threatening other people is real and it's wrong! I can understand frustration, but then taking it a step further where you deliberately want to hurt others with your insults is just taking it one step too far. I know that a lot of people feel they can get away with this type of shit but I really hope that one of these days those people will be caught, because I'm sick and tired of these cowards behind their keyboard or controller saying horrible things without even realizing what they're saying and doing. Just because someone is too stupid to realize what they're doing is wrong doesn't make it right!

But online hate is often just a moment of insanity, right?

Maybe some people see it that way, but other people are clearly making an effort of hurting others with their words because they think it's funny or they really don't care about what they're actually saying. I understand anger, I get angry and I sometimes say things I don't really mean. But then there are people that make an effort to type all these type of insults that really make me wonder if that person is mentally challenged or just being a huge douchebag. Because if you take the time to actually type the insults then the moment of insanity, as some might call it, has already passed and you're saying stupid things with a clear head. If you're plugged in with a microphone then it happens that you sometimes say things you don't really mean, even if some things are really bad I don't think everyone always means what they say. But it doesn't mean that it's ok. Which is why it's better to disconnect your microphone when you're frustrated to keep you from saying things to others you might regret. Ok your neighbours won't love you for it but at least you keep the verbal abuse to a minimum.

What should you do if you have a temper?

Some people would say that you need help, but I think you can handle certain things yourself. For example don't expose yourself to situations that make you mad and if you decide to do that then take a break every hour or mute yourself (most microphones have that option) before you say something bad. I'm not saying you can't talk with others or that you can't play games that frustrate you, but keep an eye on yourself and when you feel things are going wrong then you might want to take it easy. In the end it's just a game and if someone is rude to you then it suits you better to be the bigger man and just ignore the idiot. If you feel that someone is crossing a line then you can always report someone, hopefully that takes care of that person but unfortunately I doubt that's actually true. You can't avoid online hate but you can learn how to deal with it. Not everybody is going to be your friend and that's ok, some people you don't even want as your friend. Focus on the good things in life and not the bad things, in the end that makes you a lot happier!
