Games are more like movies now?
If you ever played a Metal Gear Solid game then you probably know what I mean, because the amount of dialogue and cutscenes in the Metal Gear Solid games is just ridiculous! Not that there is anything wrong with having a story in your game, but too much of something can sometimes have the opposite effect on players and instead of enjoying the game you quickly get bored with it or you just want to skip every cutscene and conversation in game. Perhaps some people do enjoy more dialgue and cutscenes in a game, but is this what future games should have or should we stick to just having action packed games?
Why is it bad to have a lot of cutscenes in a game?
In Final Fantasy I love the cutscenes, it was a moment where you could enjoy the story and see what the characters are up to when they don't fight random enemies on the world map. But now it feels like cutscenes are taking over, especially in certain games. This doesn't have to be a bad thing but the problem is that there are a lot of cutscenes and sometimes with terrible checkpoints you end up having to go through the same cutscene ten times and if that's a cutscene you can't skip then that's a cutscene you'll hate sooner or later! Cutscenes aren't a bad thing, but too much of something usually is a bad thing. Let's not forget that it's a game and if you want to tell a story with a lot of animations then by all means make a movie. I don't hate cutscenes but I would like to keep them to a certain amount instead of throwing people to death with them when they just want to play the game!
Are games without cutscenes better?
I wouldn't say that, mostly because some of my favourite games absolutely have cutscenes in them. Once again I'm not saying that cutscenes are a bad thing, it's just not fun when you spend half the time while playing the game you actually watch cutscenes instead of being able to play the game. I think Metal Gear Solid V has about six hours of cutscenes in it, maybe some people like that but others really hate it. Espcecially if you want to play the game for a second or third time, I doubt many people want to go through six hours of cutscenes again! I guess that makes certain games better, where it's mostly based on action and multiplayer fun. For example Overwatch is one of those games where you don't have cutscenes in the game but instead you can see some interesting cinematics on youtube and enjoy them there. That keeps the game quick and fun, while the fans of the story and the cinematics can watch them on youtube. So everyone wins, in a way I guess.
