How free are you in an open world game?
Whenever I play an open world or sandbox game I want to go my own way and do my own things, up to a certain point that's possible but there are always things you need to do or missions that kind of control your actions. Personally I don't like that, because an open world game should give you all the freedom there is up to the point where you decide what you do and how you do it instead of following some random npc and doing what he or she wants you to do.
You get a lot of freedom in open world games, right?
Sure, in some open world games you get a lot of freedom. But you're still just the guy or girl that has to follow orders and do what you're told. So why not make a game where you do whatever you want to do, which means you make your own missions and make your own way through the game. I guess that can be too much freedom for some players or make the game too chaotic, but I think it might actually work for certain games.
Players can't handle too much freedom?
This might seem ridiculous but let me explain. For example you play Skyrim and instead of fighting the dragons you decide to help them, find a way to become a dragon and join the destruction of Skyrim or you find a way to control them and you become the villain. My point is that these options don't exist in the game, it would be too much freedom for the player and I think the developers decided that this would ruin the story or make the experience in the game too chaotic. Which is why there are usually paths you have to follow and rules you have accept, because without that things would be that much more chaotic and it might make the game too weird or too much for some players. In games there is often a path laid out in front of you, of course you still need to walk on the path and do all the things to reach the end but your freedom is intertwined with that path. So you have to ask yourself how free you really are in an open world game.
What kind of game would you be playing with that much freedom?
I'd say it would almost be some type of life simulator but even with the Sims you have restrictions, unless you use mods. But imagine a game where you're someone that wants to become a hero and you do good things and you decide how you do these good things, but at the same time you could become a criminal and do bad things and you decide what kind of bad things you want to do. As a hero you could give money to a charity, but you could also slap on a mask and fight crime. But if you like being bad you could rob banks or go on a killing spree. I think the problem with that idea is that it becomes too real, because in real life people do that as well and if a game would be made where this is considered as normal then you can bet your ass on it that people will want to get that game banned. Because a lot of people are convinced that these type of games will influence people in a bad way. Just look at GTA V and the amount of hate that game has gotten just for being what it is, a game that's fun to play but doesn't fear giving the players the power to kill people or do other bad things. Once again these are player actions and not something you have to do. I guess we're just not ready for all that freedom in one game or at least some people aren't ready, mostly people who don't even play games and consider themselves good people for keeping other people from having fun playing a game. So maybe we don't have all the freedom we want in a game I do see an improvement and that things become better with each new generation of games, so maybe one day we get that game that gives us everything we always wanted or it will just stay a fantasy.
