Sinful Sunday: Making excuses why you fail in a game
I think we've all done it at some point, you make up an excuse why you fail in a game. I didn't get a lot of sleep, my head hurts, my controller isn't working, there's lag or the other person is cheating. I think we've all said something like that to explain the failure in a game. I'm not proud of that but it happens and can you really blame someone? Who wants to admit that you suck at a game? Well if you get a bit older then, hopefully, it doesn't really matter that much anymore and you can be honest that you suck at certain games.
It's not my fault?
I think the main reason why people come up with excuses why they fail in a game is that some people don't want it to be their fault that you lose or that things went badly. Someone has to be blamed but as long as it's not me. Deep down inside you often know if you're to blame or not, if you did you best and you did nothing wrong then I can understand that you're frustrated that you lost. But is it really that important to find someone to blame? Do you think that this will make you feel better? You still lost and it's not going to change the fact that you lost. But it does help if you know what went wrong, then you can work on that for the next match or attempt so hopefully you succeed that time. I don't think it's a good idea to play the blame game, to find someone you can blame for losing. Even if someone was responsible for losing then you can be mature about it or a completely and utter douchebag. Maybe switch roles in a team, use different weapons, a different strategy even if that's needed or take a break and try again later. When you're in a bad state of mind then things often go from bad to worse, if you're already blaming someone then things will only get worse over time and eventually you'll be shouting at the person you think is responsible or you might even end up blaming the entire team. Strangely enough a lot of people that blame others so fast never look at themselves, because it always has to be someones fault and somehow it's never the person accusing others.
Making excuses is trying to hide your own shortcomings?
You could say that, perhaps you really are bad at a game but you're afraid to admit that. I know that when I'm recording a video I'm less likely to admit that I suck at a game then when I'm not recording. The thing is that you don't want others to see you as a failure, to think that you suck at a game. I know that not everyone can be amazing but that doesn't mean that you want everyone to think that you suck at that game. But I learned to admit these things, when I suck at a game I will admit it. Unless I truly believe that I'm not terrible at the game, I guess I can be quite stubborn sometimes. When I play Friday the 13th then I know that I suck, I'm terrible as Jason and I'm terrible as a counselor. I have a bit more confidence in my skills when it comes to Overwatch but I still don't think I'm good, at most I consider myself to be decent as certain heroes. I think modesty kind of protects you against failure. By already admitting that you're not that good then you have less to be defensive about. If you claim to be amazing at a game then failure will be much harder to deal with and if others see you fail then they will laugh at you if they heard you brag about your skills in that game before. So maybe you shouldn't brag too much about your skills and just play the game. Even if I'm pretty good at a game I try not to brag, not only is that annoying to listen to but if things don't go your way then the humiliation will be much worse. Do your best and try to have fun, that's probably the best way to play a game. If you do end up failing then try to keep the excuses to a minimum, as hilarious as it might be to some people to hear you ramble about all the things that made you lose it can be quite annoying to listen to the same old excuses all the time. Sometimes it's better to just be honest and say that you suck at a game. It's not a big deal to admit that!
