Life is Strange: Before the storm, an unexpected surprise?

I have to admit that I didn't see this coming, ok the popularity of Life is Strange made me always hope for a sequel but to get a prequel is a bit unexpected. Mostly because we know what happened to Chloe in this prequel, so it kind of feels like going through something where we already know how it ends. But does that mean that this game is unwanted? I don't think so! I really like Life is Strange so I definitely want to check this game out, eventhough not everything is the same.

Chloe isn't Chloe?

Life is Strange: Before the storm you play as Chloe, this means no time powers and just running off your mouth in certain situations. Unfortunately this also means that if you make mistakes you can't rewind time and do it differently, so you might want to keep that in mind. But Chloe is also different, she's not exactly the punk chick with blue hair you know from Life is Strange, she's a teenager who is in pain and is acting out, this doesn't just get her in trouble but it also helps her meet a special friend. This friend is Rachel Amber. Anyone that has played Life is Strange knows exactly who she is, but for anyone who hasn't played that game I'll shut up about it. Another thing that is different about this Chloe is that another voice actor is doing her voice, which might be a bit weird at first but I don't think it ruins the game. These things happen and as much as you want Chloe to sound exactly like she did in Life is Strange it's not something that ruins the experience. From what I've seen and heard so far I can't say that Chloe's new voice is bothering me or that it's bad. Sure it's different but definitely not bad!

How is this Life is Strange without time powers?

I know, the time powers made Life is Strange pretty unique and also a lot of fun. It let you be a complete asshole one moment and then change everything the next moment. You could try different approaches and choose whatever made you feel more comfortable. As Chloe you don't have time powers, you can use your attitude to get things done. But often it will still come down to you being clever. For example if someone doesn't want to let you pass him or her you need to find a way around him or her. You might also remember that Max would take pictures of certain things in the game, you could say those are the collectibles in Life is Strange, and in Life is Strange: Before the storm Chloe can tag certain spots with grafiti. It's a bit different but fits more with this character.

What does this game mean for the sequel?

That remains to be seen, I mean I hope there is a connection between Life is Strange and Life is Strange 2. But from what I heard Life is Strange 2, so the sequel and not this prequel, is with different characters so perhaps it has no direct connection with Life is Strange or Life is Strange: Before the storm. That doesn't mean that Life is Strange: Before the storm is a game you can skip, I think most fans want to check it out and find out what was exactly going on in Chloe's mind. Because instead of hearing the thoughts of Max you can now hear the thoughts of Chloe. Ok she might not be exactly the same Chloe you know and love from Life is Strange but I think in a way you're getting her there in this game. In three episodes you go through Chloe's difficult time and on an adventure with Rachel. Even if we all know how it ends it doesn't mean that it's a waste of time and money, I definitely want to know what exactly was going on and spending some more time in Arcadia Bay doesn't seem like a bad idea to me! You should also keep in mind that the prequel is made by another company, so it's not the developers of Life is Strange but I think they got some help from the original team or people that worked on Life is Strange. So I doubt you have to worry that this game will suck, I think it offers you a new perspective on things you might think you already know but could actually quite different. I can't wait to play the game when it comes out on the 31st of August!
