Movie Monday: The Mummy (2017)
A remake of a remake, I guess you could call this movie that but I don't think that's really important. You're probably more interested if this movie is worth watching and I must say that I'm a bit conflicted about that. Why? Because the movie has good things and bad things, I enjoyed some parts and other parts really made me wonder why I'm watching this movie. Hopefully I can give you at least a bit of an idea what you can expect with this movie and if it's worth checking out.
Tom is dead, Tom is alive?
So let me start immediately with one of the weird parts in this movie. You follow Nick Morton, played by Tom Cruise, when he discovers a hidden tomb and he releases a mummy from her prison, without him realizing that at the moment. This meant that he was cursed and that he can't die, so when he crashes with a plane he somehow didn't stay dead. But it also meant that he's now connected to this mummy, her name is Ahmanet, and that this causes a lot of problems in his life. I actually like the dark tone in this movie and a cursed hero who actually isn't really a hero, Nick Morton is a bit of a scumbag when you first see him, so that makes the character interesting. It's just a shame that you kind of lose interest in the character the further you get into the movie.
Doctor Jekyll in a mummy movie?
This is probably one of the weirdest things about this movie, seeing Doctor Jekyll in a mummy movie. Not only is that weird it also doesn't really fit in my opinion. I get the idea that the Mummy was supposed to be the first movie in a line of movies inspired by the old monster movies and that Jekyll would play a part in some of those movies with his special anti monster squad of scientists and soldiers. I'm not saying that this is bad, it's just weird and Russell Crowe, playing as Doctor Jekyll, is definitely playing as an interesting character in the movie but it just seems weird and in a way wrong for this character to be in this movie.
Should you watch this movie or not?
If you like adventure movies, scary movies (eventhough I wouldn't really call this a scary movie) and you like action then this movie can give you some of that. I really enjoyed seeing Sofia Boutella as Ahmanet, the mummy, which was definitely a bold and interesting choice. There is also a bit of romance in the movie so it seems that almost everyone can get something out of this movie. Is it a really satisfying movie? Without spoiling anything I have to admit that I wasn't a big fan of how it ended. I understand that this movie is a stand alone type of movie, it was, maybe still is, supposed to be a start for other monster movies and they're all connected but that doesn't take away the bad feeling I got after the watching this movie. It's fun but after watching it just once I was pretty much done with it. So I would advice you to rent this movie instead of buying it, just to be safe if you're interested in watching the Mummy.
