Fortnite (first impression)
I got early acces to Fortnite and immediately started playing yesterday. I was a bit nervous, I mean it's always a bit of a gamble when you pre-order a game without having played it yourself before, but I must say that the game didn't disappoint. But I have to admit that certain things are a bit lame. I'll give you the details below.
Zombie killer/builder/scavenger?
You pretty much fill all these roles, but mostly it's about killing the husks, they're not called zombies, and protecting the objective. The best way to protect the objective is by building a good defense and some well placed traps. This brings me to my first disappointment, the traps are limited and you can only use that many of each type. Not only does that mean that you have to place them well it can also mean that certain parts might not be that well defended and it makes it harder for you as a defender to protect the objective. Of course you can team up with others to make it easier for yourself but I can understand that you probably prefer to play on your own when you don't have any friends to play with. Before you get to your objective I can definitely advice you to do some exploring at gather as many resources as you can. You actually carry these resources over into the next mission so what you get in one mission you can bring to the next one. So if there are a lot of cars in one mission then be certain to break those down with your pickaxe, this is how you gather resources, so you get the metal and other resources you need to craft the best walls and also to be able to craft weapons and ammo. It's possible that in your next mission there aren't any cars or at least not that many, so if you are low on resources you could get yourself in trouble!
Bigger and better?
In Fortnite you gain experience you can use to improve your character (which improves your stats), to improve your weapons and traps (so they're more effective and won't break down that fast), to learn new skills (which helps you unlock new classes and new abilities) and it gives you acces to llamas which hold surprises in them when you break them (don't worry the llamas aren't real). You can also get survivors you can use to strengthen yourself, by adding them to a squad, or to improve the defense for your own base. You can actually name this base yourself and build the defense how you like it, of course the game will assist you at first but you pretty much have your own creativity to work with once you get past the basic training. Another disappointment with this game is that not all the heroes are available from the start, you actually have to unlock them and apparently also the male and female versions of a class. You start as the female soldier class and not that long after that you get the male constructor class. But then you have a bit of a gap between getting the other classes. I think it's a bit of a shame that this isn't just available from the start, let people play as the character class they want to play instead of having to go through several missions to be able to unlock them one by one.
Build and explore as much as you like?
You can do that, but you often get a bonus, which means extra experience, if you don't build more than the number on the screen, at least in some missions, and if you finish the mission within a certain amount of in game days. So as much as you want to go crazy with building or exploring I would advice you to keep an eye on those bonus objectives. But if you don't care about that or if you have friends with you then you can definitely go for a bit of exploration and just build whatever you want. Remember that wood is the weakest material and metal is the strongest material. At first gathering these materials goes slow but you quickly learn a new ability that lets you gather them much faster by showing you the weak spot and if you hit these weak spots you gather materials much faster! Even if the husks destroy some of your walls or other things you can build them again or repair them if they're not destroyed. You can do this during the fight or if you see an opening in the attack waves. The tutorials in this are pretty good, they've already learned me a lot and I think I've got the building part pretty good under control. For example to build doors in walls or to build low walls. It seems simple but if you don't know how to do it then you could get yourself in trouble during a fight! Low walls are great for slowing down enemies while you can shoot them from a distance, I use that tactic a lot against the ground troops. I can easily hop over the walls and shoot enemies while most of them will have to break through them to get to me or the objective.
Is this game worth checking out?
Absolutely! Ok the game might have some issues, after the first mission I had to open a llama box and somehow it didn't appear on the screen and the game wouldn't let me do anything else. But restarting the game fixed that issue. Sometimes the game will also have a bit of lag and eventhough it might not run that smooth all the time it never caused and real frustration or trouble for me. The game is absolutely fun to play and I bet it's even more fun with friends. But if you're more of a lone wolf like me then it's still a great game to play, some missions do get pretty tough on your own but some good building and placement of your traps can make a big difference! I really enjoy the building and exploring part of the game, it's pretty relaxing and also satisfying to build something cool. You can be super practical or you can go all out with a big fortress and using traps to keep husks away from the objective. I really enjoy playing this game and I can't wait to play it again today!
