YouTube adventures -59- Hobby or career?

I think a lot of YouTubers start with making and posting videos just for fun, but if you become pretty succesful then it's tempting to try and make a living out of that hobby. Why wouldn't you? I think most people can only dream of doing something they like to do and earn money with that. Unfortunately most people don't succeed with that, I guess there is just too much competition and some of the big channels usually get most of the attention and that leaves a lot of other channels in the shadows of these big channels. So YouTube...

Hobby or career?

When I started with putting some videos on YouTube in 2013 I didn't think I would do it for more than a year. Not that I didn't like what I was doing but I pretty much thought I would get tired of it or just wanted to do something else. The thing is that I never really thought I would do much with it. But I've actually done a lot of different things with my channel. I made single player walkthroughs, multiplayer videos, achievement guide videos, videos where I talk about random things and videos where I play with friends. Ok the videos are low quality but I never made a secret about that, I'm not trying to impress anyone or trying to look cool. I just want to upload a video and share some of the funny, silly, frustrating or crazy things that happen to me while playing games.

For me YouTube will always be a hobby, I don't have the knowledge or motivation to make a career out of it. That would require me to be a lot more professional and I can't do that with the low quality videos I have now. I don't see myself changing this any time soon, not that I don't want to but it's more of a problem of not being able to do that at the moment. But that's ok, YouTube is a hobby for me and because it's a hobby I don't take it too seriously and try to keep things fun. Yes even in some of the frustration or rage videos. I want to be honest, not to just show you the fun and succesful side but also the less succesful and frustrating side of gaming.

If you do want to make a career out of YouTube then you better come prepared. You might try your luck with some low quality videos but honestly with all the competition out there I doubt many people will be interested in your content. People want to see beautiful graphics, succesful gameplay and of course funny moments. If you never say a word, have bad quality and have a lot of fails in your videos then you really have to ask yourself what you're tryingto accomplish. I'm not saying that people don't like fail videos but if you're trying to entertain people then it has to be more than just that.

The thing is that there will always be viewers, even if it's just one or two people watching your video. Sometimes it takes people a moment to find your video, but with some luck they like what they see and things can usually only improve from that point. What you want is to always give a 100% for each video, which can be exhausting but let's say some random person finds your video and you sound like you're being forced to make it then that's not fun to watch. But if you try to make the best video every time then hopefully someone will notice it and it could be the start of something good. It's not easy to make a career out of YouTube but anything is possible. It will require some patience, luck and it definitely doesn't hurt if you know a thing or two about editing.
