Sinful Sunday: Are you ashamed to speak your native language?
When you live in Europe I'd say that most people will learn more than one language, it makes sense when you live in a part of the world where almost every country has their own language. But what about your native language? Do you speak that language or do you prefer to stick to another language?
There's nothing wrong with my native language?
I don't mind speaking Dutch or typing in Dutch, the problem is that you reach a lot less people in your native language when your native language is pretty rare in the world. I'd say I would have more succes in French than in Dutch, so why would I speak Dutch in my videos or type in Dutch on my blog? Sure it's easier and I definitely don't hate speaking or typing in Dutch, but when only a handful of people in the world can actually understand what you're talking about it becomes a lot less interesting to use your native language. I'm not ashamed to speak or type in Dutch, I have actually made videos in the past that are in Dutch, but the problem with these videos is that the majority of the viewers has no idea what I'm talking about. As much fun as it can be to watch certain videos if you don't understand a word that is said then you feel like you're missing out on things, which is pretty lame to watch in my opinion. Which is why I usually stick to English spoken videos, those are easy to understand and a lot of people understand English even when they're not that good at speaking or typing it. It's wrong to think that your native language is dumb, maybe it's not that popular and not many people speak it but that just makes it more interesting. I love being the Dutch guy in a foreign country and be able to talk with friends and I don't have to worry that other people know what I'm talking about. It gives you some privacy in the middle of a crowd. It's also funny to see the reactions of some people when they hear you speak in a language they don't understand. So should you be ashamed? I don't think so!
Does that mean you want Dutch spoken games and movies or series?
No, I really don't like it when they put Dutch voices in English movies or series. In games it's even worse when certain games, for example Ryse: Son of Rome and Dead Rising 3, are automaticly spoken in Dutch and you can't change that. Which means I have to deal with everything being in Dutch, no matter how weird or silly that sounds. I'm so used to the English language in games that it just feels so weird to hear Dutch in a game, it's unnatural and weird. I mean when I want to hear Dutch I go outside, but when I play games I just don't expect it and to be totally honest I'm not really interested in hearing it. I like speaking English and typing in English, it keeps me a bit trained in the language and eventhough I've gotten a lot worse since my days in school I know that it helps that I still practice with the language because otherwise I would truly be horrible with it. So there are definitely perks to keeping games in English, I really don't want to see more games in Dutch. Look it's nice when the subtitles are in Dutch but most of the time I don't even need that, but it's nice if you get the option in case you hear a word(s) that you don't understand then you can quickly look at the subtitles to see what that means. I really don't like how a lot of English and American cartoons are spoken in Dutch here, that ruins most of them for me. I know that in Germany and France it's normal that English and American movies and series are in German or French in those countries, which I find dumb because you don't learn a thing that way. Isn't it better to know more than one language? That doesn't mean that your native language is stupid, but it doesn't mean that you always want to speak just one language. I love being able to speak multiple languages, it keeps things a bit more interesting and being able to say certain things in multiple languages can even be fun at times. I don't know about you but I like fun and it's fun to speak multiple languages!
