Sinful Sunday: Nobody understands why I play games

Often people look at you as if you're a failure at life when you tell them that you're a gamer, as if it's something you should hide from others. But is it really that bad to be a gamer? I mean do you feel like you need to hide that part of you from others? I don't think you have to and people that really care about you would respect you the way you are and not the way you pretend to be!

Your family think you're wasting your life?

It's always nice when your family reminds you of how gaming isn't a future. Well tell that to certain YouTubers, professional gamers and game journalists that actually make a living of what they love to do. If someone would tell them as a kid that they're wasting their life and they would've listened then their lives would've been completely different and perhaps not that succesful. The problem is that you can't take a peek in the future to see if there is a career in gaming for you. But my advice is not to give up on hopes and dreams too easily. You usually know yourself if you're good enough to be a professional gamer, you also know if you have skill and an interest in writing about games. As a YouTuber it's also about skill but mostly personality and luck, because sometimes the most talented people don't always get the attention they deserve which is a shame but unfortunately it happens. Your family probably means well but don't be afraid to believe in yourself and to try something, just don't get stuck in those thoughts and move on if things aren't working out.

Your boyfriend/girlfriend thinks that you're a loser because you play games?

I know people that keep gaming a secret from their boyfriend or girlfriend, mostly out of fear because they think that he or she will break up with them if they find out. But what kind of relationship is that? If you can't be yourself, if you have to hide a part of yourself from the other, then what kind of relationship is that? It's not like when you first meet someone you immediately have to mention that you play games but if someone asks what your hobbies are then you can be honest and tell him or her that you enjoy playing games. If someone has a problem with that then that person isn't right for you. That doesn't mean you can only date other gamers but it's nice when you share something instead of having something that divides you. If your boyfriend or girlfriend thinks that you're a loser when they find out that you play games then this person isn't right for you, making someone feel bad just because you don't like something makes that person an asshole and I prefer not to date assholes. Maybe you do but I definitely don't like that!

Your friends think that you're weird because you play a lot of games?

Friends don't always understand you, some even say that you spend too much time on games. Maybe they mean this well and it could be that you truly spend too much time on playing games. But there is a point where someone goes from giving their opinion or advice and start messing with your life. When people think that they know what's best for you then I would kindly tell them to step back, because I don't like it when other people tell me what to do. Even when people mean well it's not their life but mine, as is your life your own. If you want to spend five hours on a day (or more) on gaming then that's your choice. I would like to add that it's not healthy to play that much on one day but that doesn't mean you have to change. If you want to change then that is something different, then you can ask for help and hopefully you get some help. But people trying to control you are unwanted people in your life. Maybe you don't have the adventures that some people have that travel a lot or do other exciting things. But that doesn't mean you're unhappy, playing games can make some people very happy and it's nice when your friends understand this. If they truly mean well then you can always talk about things, but the moment they try to take control then it's time for them to go. Friends are great to have but some people don't always behave like friends and then you really have to ask yourself if you want to keep them in your life.

Why do you play games?

I think we all have our own reasons to play games. For me personally it's because it makes me happy. I enjoy playing games and go on adventures in a virtual world. Maybe this isn't as exciting as going on an adventure in the real world but at least it's safer and I can quit whenever I want. Gaming is an expensive hobby but also a very entertaining hobby. You can be a hero, a villain, a hunter, a monster, a knight or a sorcerer. You can pretty much do whatever you want, something you often can't do in the real world. I like gaming because it gives you possibilities, but also because it gives you an escape from the real world. When I see all the misery in the world then it's nice that there is a place where I can find some happiness. It's not that I don't have happiness with my family, girlfriend or friends but it's nice to have your own personal bit of freedom and amusement. A place where you can be yourself and not feel guilty about the things you do, this is possible in the world of games and that's why I love playing games so much. It gives you freedom and opportunity that I probably wouldn't feel so much in the real world. Besides it's not that I'm missing out on life. I have a life outside the world of games, but it's nice to have a place where you can go to relax and enjoy yourself. Is that really such a bad thing? I don't think so!
