Does (competitive) gaming ruin friendships?
It's nice when you can share a hobby with a friend, but what if that hobby ruins the friendship? Does that make you regret ever playing games in the first play or does that actually say something about your friendship with that other person? This might not be a problem for everyone but I've had some experiences with bad friends and games that can turn even a good friendship into a bitter rivalry!
Good games, bad friends or vice versa?
The first games I started to play with friends are the type of games you play in splitscreen (Goldeneye 64, Super Mario Kart) or where you take turns (Super Mario World). This might sometimes cause some friction but because you're sitting next to eachother on the couch we usually kept things friendly. Yes even that annoying show off friend would get away with bragging. Online gaming changed a lot for me, because now your 'friends' would feel comfortable calling you an idiot or start yelling at you when you screw them over in a game. Of course most multiplayer games are meant to be good fun but you probably know just as well as me that competitive gaming can get nasty at times, even between good friends. Is this the fault of the game or of the friend? Could it be both? Nah, it's often the fault of the people and I'm not even saying that it's always someone else. I know that I can be an annoying douchebag when I lose or even when I win I can be a terrible winner. Sometimes games just bring the worst out in you. Why? Because at that moment it feels good, even if you might feel bad about it later.
Games can show you how good of a friend someone really is?
Well I can't speak for everyone but I know from personal experience how some games can reveal the true nature of someone you might consider as a friend. This guy was never a great friend but when you get along, have the same hobbies and know eachother for quite some time then it's easy to call someone a friend. Things were fine until we started playing Guild Wars Factions, a game on PC that is actually a lot of fun to play! So we both join a guild and things are fine, but then suddenly he's too busy to team up. That's ok, I don't expect people to spend every second of every day on me (that would be weird and creepy). But after two weeks of being so busy I couldn't help but wonder what he was doing. So what was he doing? He was playing Guild Wars Factions but prefered to play with his new friend, a girl he met in the game. So apparently he considers playing with this person he barely knows more important than playing with a friend he knows for more than ten years. I don't know about you but that's not something I appreciate. I confronted him with that and then he got mad at me because I called him a liar. He told me he was doing homework or had to help his parents, but he's just playing the same game as me and I see him even online. Yeah I probably forgot to mention he's not that smart either. Anyway the best part is that this person he's been talking with isn't even a girl, it turned out to be some older guy that likes to play and pretend he's a girl. He felt like a moron and it was easy to treat him like one, I think it's sometimes better to forgive than to hold a grudge. But this did show me his true colours, he wasn't such a great friend and eventhough I knew that already deep inside it still sucks when it turns out to be true.
Should you play games with your friends?
Sure, why not? I mean it's more fun playing games with your friends than just playing games alone. Maybe in a single player game it's fun to play on your own but when you play a multiplayer game it's a lot more fun to play with a friend. My favourite moments in gaming I often shared with friends, like this ridiculous kills you sometimes get on eachother or how you try to screw eachother over in another game. Of course you can have fun by yourself but games usually get a lot better if you play with friends. Just keep in might that certain games can be quite frustrating, so maybe it's smarter to warn your friends about that or try to avoid those type of games. Unless you feel like your friendship will last, otherwise you might want to stick to the fun and easy going games. If you do decide to play certain games that can be frustrating then you might want to avoid the blame game, where you blame others for failing as a team in a game, or yelling at eachother because that isn't fun, not even between very good friends! A game can't ruin the friendship between two good friends, unless you let it.
