Sinful Sunday: Being a scumbag in games
I think we all start as a nice person, we just want to have fun and play games. But somewhere on the way we change, maybe because of things that happened to you offline or things that happened to you online. The fact remains that some people turn into scumbags!
What makes you turn into a scumbag?
Speaking from my own personal experience it would be when someone else is being a scumbag to me, it feels only natural to return the favour by treating this person the same way as he or she has been treating you. But this is already where it becomes a problem, because once you start being a scumbag, even if it's just to get back to someone else, you pretty much spread this bad behaviour. The more people that act like scumbags online the more scumbags will rise, it's almost some type of zombie outbreak. Once you infect someone with it then that person will also turn into a scumbag, I would like to add that some people actually don't turn into scumbags but a lot of people would and I don't even blame them, and it will spread on to more people. For example someone is camping in a game, this isn't against the rules but it's pretty much a scumbag tactic. Once someone starts camping more people start camping and before you know it you're in a multiplayer match with campers everywhere! In a game like Rainbow Six Siege some people will team kill you for no reason at all, which makes them scumbags. But if you get back at them then others think you're a scumbag as well. I know that when I got my revenge on a guy that team killed me in the first round the other members of my team killed me when I got my revenge in the second round. As much as it feels good to get your revenge at that point nobody wins because you just end up killing eachother over and over again. Sometimes people are just scumbags, I'm not saying you should ignore what they do but I know that turning into a scumbag doesn't help anyone. Either report and ignore this moron or just try your luck in another multiplayer match. The (gaming) world doesn't need more scumbags!
How do you prevent turning into a scumbag?
The best way would be not to play multiplayer games, it's seriously the best way. But I can understand that this isn't an option to a lot of players and I don't blame them, you just want to have fun playing multiplayer games. Well you can, just keep in mind that some people are scumbags and don't give a flying fuck about you. The best way to deal with these people is not giving into the temptation to get back at them. Oh sure it feels good but then the game has one more scumbag in it and you should also keep in mind that the other people in the match will think that you're also a scumbag and that's probably not what you want. As much as you want to get revenge it's often better to be the better man and just move on, let this immature loser have his or her moment and just move on. If someone really bothers you then you can always report this person and block him or her. Why let this get to you? There are so many people online and not all of them are scumbags, it also helps if you're more social yourself. Sometimes in silent teams things go wrong because there is no communication or team work. But the moment you start talking things could go better. I have to warn you though that not everyone will be social and some will even give you hate for talking, I guess some people are just not interested in that. You shouldn't let that keep you from bringing tactics and positivity to a match. I know that competive online multiplayer can be a very toxic environment but don't let that keep you from having fun and trying to get some wins. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, but being a scumbag usually means you lose even when you win.
