YouTube adventures -56- Videos have to be in English?
A lot of videos you find on YouTube are in English, which makes sense because a lot of people speak and understand English. But does that mean you have to speak English? No, because there are several succesful YouTubers out there that speak in their native language (which isn't English) and still have succes with their videos. Just keep in mind that if you speak a language that is not well known around the world, for example Dutch or Danish, then you reach a lot less people if you speak one of these languages in your videos. But in the end it's your choice, you do what you want and if speaking in your native language makes you happy and it just works out better for you then by all means feel free to stick with that!
Videos have to be in English?
When I first started with making videos I thought about making some Dutch videos, not only does that work better for me but it's also less awkward when I play a game with friends and we speak a different language to eachother while we both understand Dutch. But I want to reach more people, because if I would make only videos in Dutch then I would reach just a very small group of people and then it remains to be seen how many people of that small group are actually interested in watching your videos. So the best chance for succes and reaching more people is to speak a language that a lot of people understand.
This doesn't mean you have to speak English, there are also a lot of people that understand Spanish (it's the third most spoken language on the world) so if you know this language then you could definitely speak that to reach a large group of people. But your safest bet would most likely be English, not that there are a lot of native English speakers in the world but a lot of people use English as a secondary language or a language to fall back to when people don't understand your native language. If you try to reach a Western audience then English is definitely a good choice, I mean you could try French but I don't know how many people speak French outside the countries that have French as their native language.
I actually did make videos where I speak Dutch, but I didn't make a lot of those. I just can't help but feel like I don't belong whenever I speak Dutch in my videos. It's like I know that people will most likely not understand me and even those that might understand will most likely not be interested in what I have to say. I'm not saying that English makes me more interesting but at least I can reach more people with this language and hopefully people that do like my videos and of course this blog have a much easier time to understand what I have to say. In the end that's what language is all about, understanding eachother and in a way connecting with eachohter. If I speak Dutch that will be much harder, so that's why I stick to English. Besides if I want to speak Dutch with other people I just need to step outside!
