W2K16, live your wrestling fantasy?
As a teenager I watched wrestling, it was the late 90's and my favourite wrestler was of course Sting. I think I watched every week some matches and always enjoyed the battles and everything that was going on. But after several years I stopped watching and pretty much didn't follow anything anymore tied to those wrestling days. But now with W2K16 I'm throw back into those memories and see a lot of new wrestlers as well. I'm surprised to see some women also playable, eventhough they're not playable in the career mode, and I really like to see some of the big names from the time that I watched wrestling. But is this game good and worth spending time on? Let's find out!
Be your own wrestler?
My favourite part about W2K16 is that you can create your own wrestler, which can be as realistic or ridiculous as you want. You can even make female wrestlers but you should keep in mind that the men and women don't fight eachother...well maybe outside the ring but not inside the ring! You can also create your own team of wrestlers and go as far as creating your own entry theme and make a personality for your wrestler. You get a lot of details and can fill in a lot of information. I really like that you can also pick a name and nickname for your wrestler that will be announced. I was really surprised my name was in there as well, both my first and last name. Creating your own wrestler is the most fun you'll probably have in this game, not that the other stuff in the game is crap but just because creating your own wrestler is just so much fun!
Career mode is hard?
This is something I figured out pretty fast, you lose a lot if you don't know what you're doing. Especially the counters require some excellent timing, mess that up and the other wrestler will hurt you a lot! Sometimes you're stuck in an almost endless combo of damage and you just have to take it when you don't have any counters left (they need to recharge if you used all of them) and that can be rough. It wouldn't surprise when most people that play this game will lose their first five matches in career mode. Sure sometimes you can get lucky and sometimes you just get destroyed in the ring! But the tutorial does learn you several things and if you spend your points wisely you can build your wrestler into a more powerful fighter. Which means you can take more damage, deal more damage and you move faster in the ring or perform your moves faster. This all can give you the benefit in a tough fight. It's difficult at certain points and there's no way to make it easier for you, career mode is on normal but sometimes it feels like hard mode because just so much can go wrong.
Play the way you want to play?
There are so many different modes to play in single player but you can also join a match with some friends and have fun trying to humiliate eachother. I like the game mode with the ladder, this means you're in the ring with other wrestlers (minimum of three and I think a maximum of six) and you have to climb a ladder while holding off other wrestlers and capture the briefcase with money that's hanging above the ring. Another mode I like is tag team where you can do some interesting moves and work together with your tag team partner. But there are so many more variations on that, for example hell in a cell or steel cage (this is where both you and your partner need to climb out of the cage before the other team gets out but you can hinder eachother easily). You can play online against other people or just play solo with your own created wrestlers or with the wrestlers in the game and there's a long list of famous wrestlers! The only things I don't really like about this game is how easy you can mess up a counter and the annoying mini games that you need to do to stay in the match or to make another player submit. For example to not get tapped out you need to hit the green area in the circle exactly when the cursor moves over it, this requires timing and you can easily mess this up while the computer controlled character will easily get out of these situations sometimes up to ten times. The submission mini game is also annoying, which is where you need to capture or evade the other characters colour, as the person trying to submit the other you're red and have to stay on blue while the other wrestler tries to avoid the red colour in the circle and you can sometimes end up going around in circles which looks really silly. I wish this was different but it doesn't ruin the fun, it just makes certain things more annoying and frustrating at times. But W2K16 is fun to play and offers you a lot of cool things to do, this is really fun if you create your own wrestler and play against other players with their creations. This can sometimes lead to some silly encounters.
