Resident Evil 7 is a mix of Silent Hills and Outlast?
If you saw the latest gameplay trailer of Resident Evil 7 then you probably know what I mean. It looks good, very interesting even but is this still a Resident Evil game? I mean where are the characters we know and love? I keep seeing new characters that seem to end up it bad places and can't defend themselves. Maybe some people like this but I miss kicking some ass as Chris, Leon, Jill or Ada. Sure Resident Evil 6 was not the greatest but you could still see it's a Resident Evil game, at this point I don't know what to make of Resident Evil 7...
Resident Evil 7 marks a new era for Resident Evil?
That will probably depend on how succesful Resident Evil 7 is going to be. Because if the game sucks or people just don't like it then things will go back to as they were, but if Resident Evil 7 will be a succes then you can expect more of these games in the Resident Evil series. I'm actually not against that, I just wish they kept some of the gameplay. I'm fine with the first person view and putting a stronger survival horror presence into the game is also fine with me. But if all I can do is hide, play as complete strangers that might end up dead and pretty much play a game that is more of a haunted house trip than a survival horror game then I can't say I'm that excited. Don't get me wrong, I'm still interested in Resident Evil 7 but I'm keeping a close eye on this game and I'm not committed to it yet!
What do you expect of Resident Evil 7?
It's too early to say, the demo was just something that would give you a feeling of the game and this new gameplay trailer feels also like something to give you an impression of this game. If this is going to be a game with completely new characters then anything can happen, which is interesting in a way because if you play as Leon then you know he won't die, sure you can die as Leon but it won't be part of the story it's just you failing in the game. So I really wonder how that will turn out, because new characters means anything can happen and that is a bit more scary than playing as certain well known characters. It would also feel really weird to go from bad ass Chris, Leon or Jill to oh help I can't defend myself anymore. So I must admit that I expect new character to explain this new type of gameplay, the type of gameplay where hiding is your number one defense and not charging in with a weapon. That makes Resident Evil 7 scary, because not being able to defend yourself in a game makes things a lot tougher, but I wonder how scary it will really be. I've seen a couple of jump scare moments so maybe this game will really surprise us. I expect the game to be a nightmare trip, you know you're in the middle of nowhere, alone and there is something out there coming after you. In the lantern gameplay trailer you could see it was a guy with a lantern looking for you and eventually the player gets grabbed by some scary woman in an underground tunnel. It's still odd to see this game as a Resident Evil game but it definitely looks interesting, I'd say keep your eyes on this game because we'll probably learn more before the end of the year.
