What kind of person are you in a game?
Have you ever played a game that made you feel bad about your decisions? Sometimes it's not your fault, it's pretty much meant to happen, for example in a game like GTA V you do bad things but it's not like you can't do them. Oh sure you don't have to run over pedestrians while riding in your car, but when it comes to the heists or killing certain people in the game then you often don't have a choice because that's the mission!
Choices in the game define who you are?
I hope not, because I did some fucked up things in games! I think that games are just a way for gamers to do things they normally would never do. Maybe for some it could be as simple as asking a girl out, for some people this is a big deal, for others it's far more extreme as robbing a bank or murder. Of course most people would never do these things in real life, but games offer you a chance to be bad without feeling bad about it. Does that make sense? I think it does. But that doesn't mean that it's always something you like. For example in Far Cry 3 (massive spoiler!) I slit the throat of the girlfriend of the main character just to see what would happen next. Of course that was an asshole move but I was just so curious if this would make you ruler of the island or something like that. Unfortunately it doesn't... I still dislike myself for doing that, but if you never try something then you always wonder what would happen if you did it and the good thing about games is that you can always play again and do something different.
Are you deliberately bad in games?
Not really, in most games I'm actually the good guy or I try at least to be the good guy. I don't pick fights and try to be friends with everyone, unless someone makes it their mission to be an asshole to me then I can be less nice! I think it's pretty much who I am, I'm not looking for trouble and I don't consider myself to be an asshole. That doesn't make me a saint though, but at least I try to do the right thing. In games it's easy to get rid of that, you can be who you want to be and do whatever you want to do. You can be social in games even if you're not social in real life, you can be bad even if you're a good guy or girl in real life. That's the interesting part about games, it allows you to be someone you're not. So sometimes it's fun to be bad in games, but it usually doesn't lead to good things in a game. For example in the Fable games when you're bad people are afraid of you and when people are afraid of you they don't want to be your friend or want to marry you. So it will be lonely, unless you bring a friend with you into your game (in Fable 2 and 3) and just hang out with him or her. I really like being someone else in games but somehow always end up being the same type of person, I hardly ever turn completely evil and will nine out of ten times do the right thing. I guess that's just who I am and as much fun as it can be to be different in the game I can't help but fall back to who I am in real life in the game.
