You don't have to be online to play games?

These days it's all about online gaming, always be online when you play games or else. Well there isn't really an or else but if you don't play online you'll discover some unpleasant suprises. For example did you know that if you play offline on the Xbox One that your achievements don't pop? What's worse is that sometimes the game just completely doesn't register the achievement so when you do go online it will still be locked. That means that you have to play the game again and try to unlock it a second time. That's lame if you ask me!

Why do people play offline?

Maybe some people don't have internet in their house, it might seem weird to you but it's possible, or you just moved and don't have internet just yet (this happened to me in my new house). You can decide not to play games and wait till you have internet and then play online or you can just play games offline. Seems like fun right? Well playing games is fun but you'd be surprised if you knew the amount of games that require you to be online to play them or at least get achievements. This was never an issue on the Xbox 360, you could play offline and still unlock achievements without any issues but on the Xbox One things work a bit different. What also sucks is when a game wants you to be online to play it, which means if you can't go online you can't play it. In some games like Titanfall and Rainbow Six Siege that makes certain because the majority of those games are based on online multiplayer but it sucks if that happens in a game like Dragon Age Inquisition. Oh sure you can play Dragon Age Inquisition but you can use the story you created online and so you have to play in default mode, that's not fun!

So you have to be online all the time?

In a way yes you have to, at least if you want to unlock achievements on the Xbox One or play with your friends because more and more games stop supporting split screen which means you have to play online with your friends. Halo 5 is a good example of that, so goodbye couch sessions offline and hello online sessions with your friends. Of course no one can really force you to play online, but with games relying more and more on online features you just don't have a lot of choice when it comes to new games. In a way you could play those games offline, but to me that feels like playing half a game because you miss out on several things in the game that only work if you play online. Which is a shame but that's unfortunately the future of gaming, always online! I know that some people hate this but what can you do? Offline gaming is just not that popular and when so many people go online then it makes sense for developers to make games that work well with that way of playing games. But that doesn't mean it's all over for offline gamers, there are still games out there that you can play offline and one of my favourites at this moment is Don't starve and you can just play that game all by yourself and offline!
