Remembering why you love playing games

It might seem odd to you but sometimes I remember why I love playing games, because sometimes I'm playing games the wrong way where it feels more like a task and not as a hobby. I guess the problem with me is that I sometimes want to get an achievement and if that doesn't work out so well it makes me feel miserable but if I finally get it then I'm happy and everything is good again. At those moments I remember once more why I love playing games, it's the happiness and joy I get from playing these games. Maybe it's impossible to feel that way all the time but it sure feels good every now and then!

How can you forget such a good feeling?

It might be difficult to understand for some people but if you spend a week, sometimes even more, on getting an achievement then it feels more like a task you have to complete and not like you playing a game for fun. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, getting an achievement should be a bonus but the priority should always be you having fun, but sometimes it's just so tempting to go for those achievements especially when you feel like you can get them and with some luck I usually get them. The problem is that once you're in the mindset of I have to get the achievement then you sometimes forget to have fun and you're just so focused on getting the achievement that you miss out on the things that should really matter. The good thing is that once you get the achievement that you then feel such a relief and so much joy, I guess that makes it all worth it.

So succes makes you love playing games more?

Does that really surprise you? Wouldn't you like a sport more if you're good at it? Would you watch a show on tv if it doesn't interest you? Playing games is fun, but if you're really bad at it and it doesn't really interest you then I doubt you really enjoy playing games. I'm not saying that you can't like games if you're bad at it or if you're not that interested in playing games, but it definitely helps if you're good at it and have an interest in playing games. Succes makes you happy because you feel like you accomplished something, for example beating a difficult level or boss and getting achievements/trophies that you really want. Try explaining that to someone that knows very little about games, they'll probably think that you're mad!

But what if you don't succeed?

So let's say you want to get an achievement or a trophy and you've been trying to get it for weeks and you keep failing. That will probably make you unhappy, so should you continue with that or just give up? I think only you know what's best for you, because if you think that you can get the achievement/trophy then you should go for it, but be careful that you don't make it an obsession and taking a break every now and then also helps. Sometimes it just takes a bit longer to get a certain achievement/trophy, but let's not forget that sometimes you also need some luck. So don't feel bad if you have to give up, there are a lot of achievements and trophies out there and even if you can't get all of them there are still a lot of games out there that are fun to play wether you accomplish something or not. Succes makes games more fun, but you don't need succes to enjoy playing a game!
