Sinful Sunday: When games make you frustrated

No matter how much fun a game is there's always a chance that a game can make you frustrated, mostly because things don't work (at least not the way you want them to) or because of other people you meet online. That is the moment where you might want to take a step back, because if you continue with that game then things will often go from bad to worse...

How can a game be frustrating?

It seems weird that something that is meant to be fun can also be frustrating, but it would also depend who you ask. Some people are easily frustrated and that makes certain games a living hell for them, it also doesn't help when you're just not as good as other players and get destroyed a lot online. No matter how much fun a game is when you're frustrated that fun will disappear very quickly! One of the things that I really hate is when things don't work, for example I do something in the game but nothing happens. A door that doesn't open, a cutscene that doesn't load, the ground that disappears underneath you and kills you. These are all examples of moments where the game doesn't work properly and it really annoys me, up to the point where I feel like kicking my console hoping that this will fix it. Don't worry I only did that once to my Super Nintendo and I learned not to do that anymore after that experience!

Take a break?

I've mentioned this several times before, when a game frustrates you or when you're in a bad mood then it's a good idea to take a break because if you continue to play then things will only get worse. It's smarter to take a break and do something else, that gives you more tolerance for future bullshit that might happen or at least gives you some fresh air that is never a bad thing. I would like to add that some games are just very frustrating, for example Ninja Gaiden or Dark Souls. These are games that will frustrate you and you really have to ask yourself if these are games you really want to play and if it's a game that you're willing to play because they will frustrate you a lot! Sure it's a personal victory if you can beat them but at what cost does that victory come? My advice is to stick to games you really like and that are fun to play, that way you keep the chance of getting frustrated to a minimum and hopefully keep the fun in the game!
