Sinful Sunday: When a game doesn't work
I got so mad last night, I was trying to play Rainbow Six Siege online and kept getting disconnected or got so much lag that it was almost impossible to move around. I don't think I have to explain how annoying that is, I tried to be patience but after five or six matches of this bullshit you just have enough of that, instead of ranting in a video or in this blog I decided to play some Don't starve (a game that helps me relax) and I felt better after playing that game and got back into Rainbow Six Siege and things worked a bit better. I guess it helps if you take a break or just do something else for a moment, because if you keep at it and endure more frustration then you won't be having a lot of fun! But the fact remains that some games just don't work as they should, is there something you can do about that or should you just suffer in silence?
Anger doesn't solve anything?
Some games can really piss you off, you can then scream at everything or just take a break. The fact is that getting mad won't solve anything, if you want developers to do something about the issues you have in a game then it makes more sense to contact them (through support or the forum for that game) than to just scream bloody murder. Sure some games can really make you mad and when it looks like developers aren't doing anything to fix that then it makes you even more mad, but anger won't solve anything and it's just a waste of time. I'd say it's smarter to put that energy to good use and make certain that the developers know that there is something wrong with their game and also talk with other people that play or have played the game to see if they have some solutions for you. It probably feels good to scream for a moment, to let out all your frustrations but if you do that online then I don't think a lot of people will take you seriously. Maybe you don't care about that but if you want the game you like to be fixed then screaming at the developers isn't the best way to act.
But what if the developers do nothing?
It could be that they're working on something and just want you to be patient, now this can be frustrating for players but I doubt that developers want to make you mad and take away the fun in a game. That's bad for them and won't help them in the future when they treat their customers as garbage, so I doubt that there are developers out there that want to make you mad or annoy you. Unfortunately some developers can handle complaints and problems better than others, but I think it's safe to say that most developers will do their best to get their game back into good shape if something is wrong. It will require patience and time, so it's not a bad idea to play another game while the game you want to play is being patched or when the developers are working on a patch. If you really get the idea that developers aren't doing anything and that the game is broken then you can leave a complaint and warn other people about that game. Hopefully that will wake the developers up and still make it possible to get a patch for that game. If not then that game is dead and bad news for the developers, ok it sucks for you that you're stuck with a broken game but at least you know that you can stay away from that developer in the future if they keep this kind of behaviour up.
