The Division beta (my experience with the game)
When I first saw the announcement trailer for the Divsion I was interested, but the more I learned the more I realized that this is a game for people that play as a team and that a solo player like me doesn't fit in this game. Well it seems I was wrong because in the beta I play solo and got a lot of things done! Oh sure it's probably more fun and smarter to play this game with your friends or at least be a part of a team but I'm just saying that you don't have to if you don't want to!
Take back your city!
New York City has gone to hell and it's your job to clean up the mess, which means taking care of the filth that hangs around in the streets. You start with building a base of operations, this is where you get new missions and where you can build up specialized areas where you can enhance your abilities, for example learn new skills or upgrade skills you have, and buy or sell gear. This base is also a rest zone where you can heal up and stock up on ammo. You can play missions, these are story missions and help you unlock new things for your base, and there are side missions, these get you new gear or other items you can use but don't really have an impact on the story, that you can play. If that's not enough for you there are also events in the streets, these events are marked with colours and that tells you what kind of event it is and what kind of reward you get for it. For example a green event is tied to medical supplies and it will get you medical supplies, which you can use to upgrade your medical wing in your base, if you complete it. There are also tech events (yellow) and security events (blue), these are short situations where you need to protect someone, rescue someone or clear out an area of enemies. I call these events but it's just you or you and your team. I also saw a camp close to where you start in the beta and it's I saw other people, but once you hit the streets you're on your own.
Team up with other people or not?
When you leave a meeting spot, a place where people can team up or just meet eachother, then you're on your own, unless you're a part of a team already. But if you're on the streets then you won't meet other people, it's just you or you and your team. As I mentioned earlier you don't need a team to complete missions or when you want to explore the city, it does make things easier but so far I've had no real issues with completing a mission, side mission or one of the events on my own. Even in the dark zone I handled myself pretty good an managed to extract some items without the help of others, of course it's easier if you're with a team and yes other people will attack you if try to extract something. Also you're an easier target on your own, but with experience and some skill you can do more than you think!
The dark zone!
This will probably be the most popular place for most players, especially in the beta where you only get one mission and a handful of side missions. The dark zone is the place where you go if you want to get good items, some of the best items in the game are only available in the dark zone, or if you want to shoot other people. Either way you're going to bump into other people and it's up to you if you want to attack them or not, once you attack another player you've gone rogue (even if you accidentally hit someone, for example someone runs into your line of fire and gets hit) and that marks you on the map so other people know where you are. There is also a timer above your head that says for how long you're rogue and so visible on the map, if you barely hit someone it's going to be a short time that you're visible (about ten seconds) but if you continue to attack someone then you're visible for a long time on the map. Even when you don't want to attack other people and just get some good gear you'll probably have to deal with other people, because even if you don't attack someone other people can always attack you. So be ready to defend yourself, especially if you try to extract an item. Extract an item? When you find an item in the dark zone you need to extract it via helicopter, you can't just take it with you and when you die you lose it. So you really want to be careful out there! Other players can also see if you have an item, you'll carry a yellow canister on your back with the hazardous symbol on it. Even when you make it to the extraction point you still need to wait for the helicopter to arrive (which takes more than a minute if no one has called for one yet), once the helicopter arrives it will alert other players and there's a good chance they'll try to shoot you while you try to extract your item. When you manage to tie your item to the rope of the helicopter you're not done yet, you still need to defend that item because other players could still grab it. It's a lot of work for one thing but sometimes it's worth it!
Is the Division worth checking out?
I think it is, because the game offers you a lot to do and it's a fun adventure for you and your friends. Even if you have no one to play with you can still get things done and build up your base, this isn't just fun to do but also quite helpful for making your character more powerful. I don't know how long the game will keep you busy but I think it will consume quite a lot of time to fully upgrade your base and do all the missions, side missions and events. The dark zone will also keep you busy for quite some time and offers something different to people that get tired of PvE gameplay, the PvP side of the Division is brutal but can be quite rewarding. It's worth checking out and I can definitely recommend trying out a lot of things in the game. Even for gamers that prefer to play solo it can be a fun game to play, eventhough it's probably meant to play with others, but don't let that stop having fun on your own!
