The Division (first impression)

A lot of people were excited about this game, a third person shooter where working with other people is the key to victory. But now several years after the announcement and close to the release not everybody is so excited about the Division anymore. What happened? Well let's find out...

PvE or PvP?

I like playing games, sharing a game with a lot of other people can also be fun but the problem is that it only takes one douchebag to ruin the fun for everyone. So the more people you have in one game the bigger the chance becomes that one of them is a douchebag that ruins the fun for others. PvE is usually where players can do their own thing and in PvP doing your own thing can clash with other people and that can lead to some unfortunate or sometimes fortunate moments. In the Division they keep PvE and PvP separated, you have the campaign where you can do missions on your own or with other people (it's a lot easier if you team up with others) and then there are PvP areas (they're called dark zones in this game) where you can attack other players and get some good gear.

Why would you want to play PvP?

If you hate PvP then it makes sense why you wouldn't want to play that, but the thing is that the best gear in the game can be found in the dark zones and that means that if you want that then you'll have to enter those zones and you'll be exposed to PvP. You start as a neutral player but if you attack another player then you go rogue and you have a price on your head. So if players didn't have enough reasons to shoot you then that will definitely convince them to shoot you. Maybe you just want to walk peacefully in the dark zones looking for good gear, well then you're shit out of luck because once you pick up this special gear in a dark zone other players can see that. You see all gear you find in dark zones is contaminated and once you pick something up you have a yellow cannister on your back with a hazard symbol on it. So other people know that you're carrying something. This will also put a target on your back. The only way to keep the items you find there is to extract them via helicopter, unfortunately I saw that a lot of people like to camp around that area and will most likely gun you down before you get the chance to get your item extracted. So if you decide to go into a dark zone then you better bring company because going in solo or even with a friend might not be enough to make it out alive!

But what if you really want to play solo?

From what I saw that's possible, but the problem is that the game is designed for groups and so later missions will be a lot tougher on your own. Perhaps later it becomes even impossible to complete missions on your own (I don't know for certain). It's easy though to form a team because there are areas where people can wait for others and then it's just the press of a button to team up. So it's not a Destiny issue where finding a team can prove to be a challenge! You can also customize your character with new gear and some other stuff, so hopefully after some time you can create your own unique character and stand out from the rest of the players. You also get better weapons and perhaps that will make it easier to play solo, but I don't think the game is intended to be played solo and most people I saw playing always have at least one other person with them. So keep that in mind if you're interested in this game but don't like teaming up with other people!

Why are some people hating this game?

Because some people are assholes, they hate a game just because they can. Some complain about the graphics, then there are those that hate the HUD and then there are those that hate how you have to hit some people so many times before they die. If you look long enough at a game you can find a lot of things that you might not like, but if you look at games that way then I really wonder why you even play games. I don't look for things I don't like, I look for things I do like and if that's enough to motivate me to get this game. Because if you don't like a game you don't buy it and don't play it, unfortunately some people go online and whine about it to other people. Don't listen to that, check the game out yourself and make up your own mind. I think the Division can be a lot of fun, even more for people that have friends that also play this game. I'm not certain if I'm going to get this game though, mostly because I don't know anyone else that will get this game and I don't feel like playing this game on my own. It looks interesting though and if you can play the campaign at least on your own then it's worth checking out in my opinion. I do have a bad feeling about the dark zones though, to me this feels like people with friends will have a benefit and random players are just screwed. Kind of like Destiny with the raids, random players are often left out of the good stuff while teams will get the best items. I don't like that system but there isn't much you can do about that.
