How long will achievements/trophies exist?
Right now I'm over a 100.000 gamerscore on my Xbox One, which feels pretty good and it took me longer then I'd like to admit. But how long do we keep achievements and (for the Playstation gamers) trophies? It seems good now but in the (near) future it wouldn't suprise me that they got rid of achievements and trophies and replace that with something else. Of course I hope they won't but what if they did? What does that mean for you?
Why would Microsoft and Sony want to get rid of achievements and trophies?
It might seem unthinkable at this point but there will come a time that they'll come up with something new, something that might fit better with their console or their online service. For example a point system that allows you to buy things in an online store and you earn these points with achievements. On Xboxlive there is already a reward system that kind of works that way, by completing certain challenges you earn rewards but I'm talking about directly earning points with achievements/trophies and then using that to buy a gold membership or a Playstation plus membership. But you could also buy games with that or other things you might want. It wouldn't be a bad idea, but how would that work with the current system? Maybe gamerscore that you earn with your achievements might work with this but the trophy system is a bit different and so less compatible with this system. Right now this is just a guess, but it wouldn't surprise me that things might change.
Would you lose all progress that you earned with achievements and trophies?
I doubt that, because people wouldn't like that and making your customers mad doesn't seem like a good idea to me! But bringing something new to the table will change things and hopefully that will be something good. At this point I don't hear anyone complain about the achievements and trophies, so we could still have that for many years. I'm just saying that there will probably be a day that things will be different, a new console and a new way of playing games. That could take ten years and it could take fifty years, unfortunately I can't predict the future so I can't really be certain about that. Just don't be surprised if one day achievements and trophies will turn into something else. Maybe I'm completely wrong about this and to be honest with you I hope I'm wrong with this because I like achievements and trophies seem to work well for Playstation gamers as well. So I'm not saying that it has to change, it's just my fear that one day they'll disappear and that all your hard work to earn them will be gone or you see it change in something else that you're not happy with. Perhaps I shouldn't worry too much about it and just earn some more achievements, yeah that seems like a good idea to me!
