Gaming rituals

In every sport there are certain rituals, just look at baseball and you'll know what I mean, so it probably wouldn't suprise you that gamers also have rituals. Nothing too extreme, for as far as I know, but especially for professional players there are certain things they need to do and certain things they would never do. Is that silly? Perhaps, but why change something when it works in your favour!

What kind of rituals are you talking about?

It can be quite simple or subtle, for example wearing certain socks when you play games or the way you position yourself for your screen. Others go so far to wear an amulet or get a kiss from a special someone for luck. It seems silly and I guess it is a bit silly, but if that works for someone then who are you to criticise that? I think we all did things at a certain point for luck before or during a match. We all need a little bit of luck, so let's not pretend as if you're above that! Of course skill plays a big role in games, but without luck even the most skilled player can make a mistake or get taken out by a rookie. So it's probably not a bad idea to hold on to things that make you feel better, wether they give you luck or not doesn't really matter but if they give you more confidence then that's not a bad thing!

So rituals build up your confidence?

You could say that, eventhough there are people who actually believe that the rituals are a way of appealing to the gaming gods (if that's even a thing for some people) and get their favour. Now that sounds like a load of bollocks to me but if it works for you then who am I to say that you're wrong. The rituals can help you become more confident and that might lead to succes, which is no guarantee but it definitely helps if you're less nervous and feel more comfortable when you play a game. I don't think that science can explain it but if I had to put a name to why people do their rituals before playing a game then I'd say it's tradition. For example someone got an amazing victory when he or she was wearing those socks or that sweater, so now everytime this person is playing a match that he or she really wants to win then they're wearing that sweater just to give themselves that little boost of confidence. The same counts for something you did before playing a match, for example rubbing your hand on an object (it could be anything), kissing your boyfriend or girlfriend, praying or maybe yelling something out loud. It makes no sense why this is something you would do before playing a match but if people get succes with these actions then you can bet your ass on it that they do this more often just to get that little bit of extra confidence that might just help them in the game.

Do you need rituals before you play a game?

Nope, you can just do whatever you want when you play games. I don't think rituals really help you, but if you're senstive for superstitious actions then just do whatever helps you feel a bit better. It's not about what other people think of that but how it helps you feel more comfortable and hopefully help you win. I'd say you're truly lucky if you don't need rituals, if you feel good all by yourself and that you don't need to do something to boost your confidence. But there's nothing wrong with having rituals though, just don't be surprised if some people will consider that as weird and make fun of you. But as long as it works out for you then who cares what they think!
