Valiant Hearts: the Great War
With your Xboxlive gold account you can pick up Valiant Hearts: the Great War for free, but is it worth checking out? It is! At least if you like puzzles, history and playing as different characters in one game. What I really like is the backstory, reading the historic facts that you can read if you pause the game. But also the game is fun to play, not too difficult and even if you're stuck a hint will pop up after a minute or two if you're stuck.
History!
I love history and learning more about a period in time is interesting to me, playing a game and learning things is fantastic. Eventhough one game does that better than the other, in Valiant Hearts you can select the articles from the pause menu and choose if you want to read them or not. So even when you don't care about the historic facts you can just play this game and still have a good time. I would like to add that you see real pictures with these articles, some of these pictures can be quite intense and show you the horror of war.
Four characters and a dog.
In Valiant Hearts you play as Emile (French farmer who is forced to join the French army), Freddy (an American volunteer that want to help the French), Anna (a Belgium medic who is looking for her father) and Karl (a German married to Emile's daughter and is forced to join the German army). During the game you play as all four characters and learn a bit more about them, at least if you read the diaries of these characters. Each character has his or her own special ability (Freddy can cut fences, Emile has a shovel to dig and Anna can heal people), but there's also a dog that helps you out. This dog can reach parts of the map where your character can't come and is sometimes needed to beat a puzzle.
Fun.
It seems weird in a game that's about a horrible war but Valiant Hearts is a lot of fun to play, eventhough the characters don't talk much (sometimes they seem to mumble to eachother) you still feel something for the characters, you want to make it to the end and see a happy ending. Eventhough that's difficult in a war where millions of people died and you're in the frontlines without a weapon, this requires you to be clever and work around dangerous situations. Maybe a die hard shooter gamer might not appreciate this but if you like puzzles and games with some background story then Valiant Hearts is a game you might like!
