Does it help to report someone online?

In some games you have the option to report somone, for example if someone says hateful words or is cheating. But what happens with this report and do the developers take your report seriously? It's of course difficult to say without asking them directly and even then you'd have to assume that they tell you the truth. So I'm talking here from my own experience and everything that happened.

Reporting someone makes a difference?

That's what you would like to believe and I must admit that I wanted to believe that too, but usually it doesn't make a difference. But a lot of reports because of one person does kind of stick out, so I bet that more reports will help as long as they're all because of the same person. If a developer gets thousands of reports of different people then it becomes difficult to handle all of those and I bet that at least half of those are bullshit and just people that rage because someone beat them in online multiplayer. I personally don't report people unless I clearly see something that's not right, for example shooting someone several times and hitting that person and that person not taking damage. That's suspecious, of course it's possible that the game just sucks but if that only happens with that person then I would consider that worth reporting. It's then up to the developers to figure out what's up and if that person is truly innocent then that will most likely come out of the investigation if it even goes that far. This is me thinking that it actually goes that far, it wouldn't suprise me if it didn't go that far.

Should you even report people?

I can see why someone would think that, what's the point if there is a big chance that nothing will change? Well doing nothing will definitely not change a thing! There are cheaters and violent people out there that play games, these people know what they're doing and they don't deserve your mercy. I'm not telling you that you have to report people, but how do you expect the cheating and online violence to end if no one does anything? The problem is usually finding proof, which is why some developers ask if you have proof of this person cheating or saying hateful words. If you record your gameplay then it's possible but not everyone records their gameplay or just happened to record their gameplay at that moment. So you can imagine that it's difficult to have proof and to be honest I really think it's the job of the developers to play police and not the gamers.

After you report someone what happens next?

So I reported someone in Destiny, this guy had no more health and was still alive and even when people would shoot him he was still alive. He wasn't glitching or anything like that, he was just running around with a shotgun and not dying. You can imagine that this is annoying when there is someone in the game that can't die and then of course takes advantage of that. A decent person, if this wasn't his fault, would leave the game and join another game and hope it would be fixed. But no this person stayed in and was being an annoying asshole with this. So yeah I reported this guy and what did Bungie do with that? Well at first nothing, it was months later that I got a mail from Bungie where they said that they thank me for reporting someone and hope I have fun playing the game. That's weird, so not only did it take months for them to handle it or at least respond they also didn't mention what they exactly did. So was this guy really cheating or was it a fuck up on their side? Also what happened to this guy? Has he been kicked out of online multiplayer or can he just keep on going? I never saw this guy again in a match, for as far as I know since a lot of people have alternate accounts, so I guess I have to hope for the best. But you can imagine how this makes you feel, are you being taken serious with a report or not? Well once again you have to hope for the best but I can't help but feel like a lot of people get away with certain things. Perhaps it's best not to think too much of that and just have fun playing games.
