Halo 5: Guardians (single player)
From the moment you start playing the campaign you dive into a game full of action and excitement, the opening cinematic proves that and further in the game you see more of these intense moments. But I doubt you buy games for just the cutscenes, so what about the gameplay and the characters? Well they're good, it's a bit different but definitely not bad!
All for one and one for all?
The biggest change that you'll notice is that you're a part of a team, no not just random NPCs running around you but actual team members that assist you and follow your orders. This means attacking a certain enemy, make use of a vehicle or turrent and healing you or another member of your team when you or someone else goes down. That's right you can go down but you're not out! Think of it as Gears of War where you slowly bleed out, so if a member of your team gets to you in time you can be healed and back in the fight, if they're too late you die and it's game over. If a team member dies then it's not game over but you have a man (or woman) less in the field so that will make things a bit tougher. You can choose to play solo or in co-op mode where up to three of your friends can play with you. Playing with friends is fun and can definitely make some fights a lot easier, but the AI controlled team members aren't exactly dumb.
Smart team is good team?
Something you'll see a lot in games with AI controlled team mates is that they'll follow you around but they're pretty useless. In Halo 5 your team mates are actually pretty smart, they usually don't rush into battle, unless you lead the charge, and can take care of themselves. When you go down they'll try to get you back up and if that doesn't go fast enough you can always ask for help and they'll come running. They can also drive you around, for example in a warthog, and you can be the gunner, in one of the missions (I won't spoil in which one) you can drive around in warthogs and if you feel more like shooting you can be the gunner and the AI team mate will drive you around. I'm not saying they're flawless drivers but they're pretty good, they're usually not standing still and stay around enemies so you can shoot them. But if you want to be the driver then they'll be the gunner and still do a decent job. I did notice that their intelligence has a limit, for example I got shot down by a sniper and the team members came to my rescue one at a time and they all got sniped by the same sniper and it was game over. So don't expect miracles here, but they're not useless and if you play smart (which means don't rush into the middle of a battle and expect them to clear the enemies with you within a second) and it doesn't bother me to take them along in the missions.
Is the campaign worth playing?
I think it is, but then again I've always played the campaign in games (even the ones with popular multiplayer) and I can definitely recommend you checking out the campaign. You can play with your friends or go for the solo experience, whatever works best for you. I was a bit rusty, I spend too much time in other genres for the last couple of weeks, so it took me some time to get used to everything but the game isn't that difficult but I'm certain that the solo legendary experience will be quite memorable. The missions aren't very long, eventhough some missions are definitely longer than others. You switch between two teams of Spartans, one is lead by Master Chief and the other by Locke. It's easy to say that it's more fun to play as Master Chief but I also had a lot of fun playing as Locke and his team is also pretty cool! So if you can manage to break away from multiplayer I can definitely recommend checking out the campaign, I think it's worth checking out!
