Matchmaking in games sucks?

One of the reasons why I'm not a big fan of PvP is that I usually end up playing against a team of friends or at least people that work well as a team and I'm in a random team. So you can imagine how that usually goes, not so good... But does that mean that matchmaking sucks in games or that I just have the worst luck?

It's all about skill?

Several developers will say that matchmaking in their game is based on skill, so the better you perform the more skilled people you encounter. I know that this sounds cool and if this would truly be the case then it would be cool. Unfortunately it often doesn't work that way, because there are a lot of matches I played where the other team just crushed my team. I try but when you face a team that has all the best gear, know the maps inside out and stick around eachother while going for the objective then your team of random players will be crushed! At that point I don't believe for one moment that this was fair, in a way this was a victory handed to the other team and I just wasted 5 to 10 minutes on getting destroyed.

So why don't you form a team?

Ah yes, why wouldn't I? Because forming a team, I mean a good team and not just a bunch a people you pick from the internet that want to be in a team, isn't that easy. It takes time to find people with whom you can work well together and with whom you have fun playing games, at least if you're in the game to win it. If you don't care about winning and just want to play games then it should be easier to form a team. It's not always easy to find like-minded people but once you do it can give you a better chance against another team. Eventhough sometimes one player can carry a team, but there aren't a lot of players that can pull that off and one man or woman can only do that much against another team that works well together!

What should developers do?

First of all make certain that random team face other random teams, because facing a team of people that communicate and work well together is something that will destroy a group of random players that don't communicate and often don't work together. Then it's important to look at skill, if a team loses a lot then you don't match them up with a team that wins a lot. In Destiny they have plans with that in the Trials of Osiris but I'd first like to see it in action before I believe that. But the idea is that if you win two matches then you're matched up with a team that also has two victories. If your team has lost a match then you face a team that also lost a match. I know that this isn't easy to set up but having fun in a game is probably the key to succes and constantly losing in multiplayer because the other teams keep destroying your team isn't fun. It's also fun when you stand a chance against other players as in their of your own skill level, instead of playing against people that have more skill in that game or just have a better working team than yours. It makes sense that you want to have fun in a game and keep as much frustration out as possible.
