Looking back at.....DC Universe Online!
When DC Universe Online came out I was still playing City of Heroes, but I still gave DC Universe Online a chance and that was a good idea because it's a fun game. Just like City of Heroes you can create your own hero and decide what type of powers you have, but the customization options are a bit more limited. A lot of costume pieces you have to unlock in the game and that often means that you'll change your character a lot while playing. Which isn't a bad thing but it's pretty cool if one of your first costumes is going to be the costume for your character, it's kind of your symbol and how others can recognize you. But DC Universe Online is a great game, at least if you manage to fight your way to the top and not stay stuck in one area.
Just one of the heroes.
In DC Universe Online you play with other people in an online version of Metropolis or Gotham City, of course there are other places where you can go but you usually start there, and make a name for yourself as a hero or villain and move up the ranks to get further in the story. You're a new hero, you got your powers recently, so you need a mentor and you can choose from a certain amount of well known character in the DC Universe. I think a lot of people would pick Batman but Catwoman and maybe even Superman and Wonder Woman had their fair share of followers. If you pick Batman you start in Gotham City and if you pick Superman you start in Metropolis, which makes sense to me. The plan is to fight against Brainiac that threatens the entire world and so heroes and villains must work together to beat him, at least for as far heroes and villains can truly work together.
Not just a pretty face!
When you make your hero it's not just about looking good, it's about choosing an offensive power and a defensive power. For example you pick dual wielding guns as your offensive power and gadgets as your defensive power, but you can also pick fire powers for offensive and then also choose fire as your defensive power. This gives you some unique combinations and hopefully it's a good combination of your powers that helps you in battle. Some powers make you more suited as a tank, you can take more damage, other powers give you the role of support, you can heal or buff allies, and that can make the difference in a fight. So playing solo as support can be rough, but in a team you'll be needed!
Heroes and villains unite!
You work together with the villains or as a villain you work with the heroes but there are still plenty of situations where you fight against eachother. You'll also encounter a lot of familiar faces, I really enjoyed seeing the Titans (former Teen Titans) in action and helping them in their mission. It's just one of many situations that is fun to check out and of course to play. It helps if you have friends that help you but even solo you can get several things done, just don't be surprised that some enemies are a bit tough to beat on your own. But you become stronger the more you level up and you unlock more powers, so it's not that you're helpless. After City of Heroes stopped this was my main super hero game and it's fun to play, a bit different then I'm used to but definitely fun to play!
