Low expectations lead to better games?

This might seem weird to you but with low expectations games usually turn out to be better because of that low expectation, but if the game is crap then you haven't lost much there (ok maybe some money) and the disappointment isn't that big. The worst thing that could happen is a game you've been looking forward to all year, maybe even longer, and it turns out to be a terrible game or just not much fun. That's rough, especially if that ruins the experience of the previous games you played in the series. For example Resident Evil 6 wasn't received that well and some people had enough of the series and moved on to something else. Perhaps that's a bit extreme but it happens.

So you should have low expectations for every game?

No of course not! I mean games that are looking good, the gameplay is good and the sound is good then why would you be having low expectations? It's more about the games you don't know much about, games that don't show gameplay (yet) and the trailers don't really show you what it's about or what you can expect. So with these games it makes sense that you have low expectations, which is a good idea because disappointment can be rough for a gamer especially if you put your last money in a game and it turns out to be a piece of shit!

How do low expectations make games better?

If a game is bad then it won't hit you that hard and when a game is good then it becomes even better because you had low expectations. Now I'm not saying that we should all be pessimists but it does help if you don't put your hopes up too high for something you know very little about. That can change of course if you get more information, then you can easily become more excited about a game and then get higher expectations. That's how it usually starts for me and it makes things a bit better for me because when I buy a game that's crap then I usually already had a bad feeling about it or at least didn't have high expectations, this is a game that I bought because I was willing to give it a chance but not because I thought it would be amazing. There's nothing wrong with taking a chance, just be prepared that sometimes games aren't as much fun as the developers want you to believe! Low expectations can definitely help with that, but don't forget to gather some information about a game before you buy that game because that's usually your best defense against buying a game that isn't a lot of fun for you to play!
