Hack and slash vs turn based games
This might not suprise you but I´ve always been a fan of some mindless slaughter in games, it´s the perfect way of blowing off some steam and relaxing. At least for me. It doesn´t take a great mind to figure out the controls and even if you just press random buttons you´ll probably make it pretty far in those games. But these type of games aren´t meant for thinking everything through, here you just go in and kill every enemy you face. But then I played Final Fantasy VII, what a game that is! From the moment I saw the opening cinematic to the point where I saw the credits I enjoyed playing that game. But it´s a timed turn based game, which means that the members of your team fight in turns and you´ll have to hurry because while you´re busy with selecting what type of attack or action you want to make with your character you´re also under attack from enemies that can disrupt your strategy.
So how can turn based games be fun? I guess these games aren´t for everyone, if you truly only enjoy mindless slaughter in games then turn based games might not be for you. But for everyone that likes a challenge, to try something new then this might actually work for you. Still I´d strongly suggest you try a turn based game first before you try a timed turn based game. Because if it´s just turn based then it´s less stressful than when you constantly have to hurry. Especially if you´re unfamiliar with the menus and all the things you can do. I remember I drank a lot of health potions to heal, but then I discovered that there is also a magic spell that heals. This might seems logic to you but to a teenage guy with no experience in the field of turn based games that was quite a discovery. Discovering the limit break (your ultimate move that can do massive damage) was easier to discover, because I would take a lot of damage and the closer you get to death the easier it becomes to get your limit break. To me a game like Final Fantasy VIII was an adventure, a story instead of reading I experienced myself. As much fun as hack and slash games can be, after some time they get a bit boring and repetative.
Hack and slash games are boring? That really depends, some games really only have a few moves and a certain group of enemies so that doesn´t really make it interesting. Still that can be fun, just not for a long time. I spend many hours in Final Fantasy VIII, but I wouldn´t spend many hours in Baldur´s Gate Dark Alliance. It´s fun to hack and slash your way to the end of the game, just not in a long gaming session. Hack and slash games need some diversity, special powers that bring something new to a game or more different types of enemies. Of course it´s fun if you can play with your friends in these games, that´s probably one of the strongest positive points about hack and slash games. Something a lot of turn based games can´t offer, which is a sham but in a way a bit fitting as well. Because a turn based game is more your adventure, while in a hack and slash game it can be your adventure together with your friends. Also playing with a friends makes it a lot less boring, even if things are repetative. That´s why I´m always suprised when there is a hack and slash game that doesn´t allow you to play with friends. I have fond memories of playing with friends in hack and slash games, not just online but also playing on one screen together on the couch. No matter how boring the game could get, you somehow always find things to keep the game interesting. Like a jumping challenge or racing around the map.
To be honest with you, I think both types of games have their own unique thing to offer. Some might prefer to keep it simple and just do what they enjoy most in hack and slash games, but others might enjoy something more than that and they want to go on an adventure in a turn based game. Either way they should keep you busy for some time, especially turn based games can be pretty long. But sometimes they can also have boring parts, things that are less interesting to you and maybe that´s when you wished you could invite a friend to make the game a bit more interesting. So I wouldn´t discard one if you favor the other, because there is fun in both games. But at the end of a long day I can´t help but find myself in a hack and slash game just to unwind a little, that´s something a turn based game can´t do for me.
