Looking back at.....Age of Empires!
I think most pc gamers have played this game, not just because it´s a lot of fun but also because it´s easy to learn and can keep you busy for quite some time. A lot of games suffer under the short single player modes combined with the lack of a multiplayer or a repetative multiplayer. This doesn´t keep you busy for a long time, sometimes you even wonder why you spend so much money on a game that you beat in just a few days. Age of Empires can keep you busy for a lot longer, you can play different scenarios where you´ll have to beat another army. Army you say? Yes for anyone that doesn´t know what Age of Empires is then you´re in for a treat, because Age of Empires is a strategy game. Isn´t strategy boring? I guess some people might think that, but I do think that Age of Empires keeps it interesting. It´s not a strategy game that you have to take very serious, actually you can fool around and create an army of priests to convert the enemy army. But if you prefer peaceful gameplay then you can do that as well, the trick is to build your civilization from the stone age all the way up to the iron age. The faster you get to a new age the better your weapons, buildings and army can get. It also offers new technology and options to the game.
Strategy is super serious, how can you say that Age of Empires isn´t to be taken too seriously? I´ve got two words for you, big daddy! That´s a cheat you can activate at any time in the game and that creates a black sports car with a rocket launcher. This means that you can obliterate the enemy army without too much effort. But be careful priests can convert your all powerful car, so don´t be suprised if you get blown up by your own car! Still it doesn´t take cheats to show that this game isn´t that serious, just listen to the priests with their chanting. But it´s still brutal, if you slay troops then they´re dead on the ground. I mean you´re still in a strategy game, so don´t expect clowns to show up and bomb the shit out of the opponent.....oh wait is that another cheat?
Aren´t there more Age of Empires games? Correct, there are several other games. Age of Empires II aka Age of Kings takes place in Medieval times, which means crusades and knights most of the time. But you´ll also see some heroes from that time, something you also saw in the first Age of Empires game. Personally I find Age of Empires II a bit more serious, they went for a more realistic look and that is awesome but I really did miss the silly moments in Age of Empires. Age of Empires III is about the earlyl days of America, which means contact with Native Americans and building up the beginning of what will later be the most powerful country in the world. Well you might disagree about that but I don´t think the USA is a girl scout selling cookies at the door! Anyway it has a very nice campaign mode where you pass through time and you follow a certain family. You´ll play with the ancestors of the first guy you play with, which is an interesting choice and it also makes the game more fun to play. This isn´t the last game in the series but it´s definately my favourite, Age of Mythology! This goes back to the roots of Age of Empires, but this time they add Greek mythology to the story. Which makes building up your civilization a lot more fun because depending on which god or goddess you pick you can get different powers. It also unlocks new units and sometimes those are mythic units. So don´t be suprised to see creatures from the myths walk around. The same counts for heroes, these are strong characters on the map that have special powers. But you don´t only have Greek mythology, you also have acces to Norse and Egyptian mythology. Which brings a nice mix into the different type of civilizations you can choose, also it makes playing as the same civilization fun because you have to choose between gods and goddesses. When your civilization is advanced enough they can make a wonder, which is a huge building that will often win you the game. But it takes a lot of resources to make and also quite some time! The campaign is just beautiful, as you follow an Atlantian hero on his quest to save the ´old´ world. The dlc for this game is also a lot of fun, there you´re introduced to titans which are huge creatures that can lay waste to an entire city. You play as the son of the hero in the main game, which still keeps the family connection in tact. You fight against these huge titans and later you can also have your own titan! It´s a lot of fun to control such a strong creature and just destroy your opponent with it. Once again this game isn´t serious, it´s just a lot of fun and that has always been my main motivation for playing games!
